So sad to hear of the passing of RADM West. As a former COMSUBON 15 Commodore myself — my family and I greatly appreciated his service to our Submarine Force in Guam. “Guam is Good!”
He had a sterllng reputation and though I never served with him directly he was well known throughout the Force.

The passing of Admiral West was received with great and heartfelt sadness. His mentorship, encouragement, and leadership were profoundly influential in my development as a Naval Officer and in making me a Submariner. Formative in my first assignment, his impact on my career continued through decades of intersecting naval service and evolved into a deep and lasting bond of friendship. A disciplined, demanding, and kind hearted renaissance man of diverse interests, he inspired the best in those who were privileged to know him. Memories of him and his example will continue to influence and motivate my future. It was an honor to know him and call him my friend and teacher. The privilege of rendering gravesite honors to such an impactful and memorable person will be bittersweet.
With sincere condolences to Ralph’s and Kay’s son, daughter, grandchildren and their families, Kindest regards — Don Hempson
