Paul B. Hayden, 73

January 20, 2014

On January 20, 2014, Paul B. Hayden, retired para-legal of the Washington Gas Light Company and now residing in Lititz, PA went peacefully to be with the Lord.

Born November 18, 1940 Paul grew up in Washington DC in St. Joseph Home for the Boys and later adopted by Jack and Dorothy Hayden in 1956 after they had fostered him for four years. He was a graduate of Bishop McNamara High School and Southeastern University. He married Linda Hayden in 1970 and was a beloved father to his four children, Kimberly Hayden Williams of Columbia, MD., Tara Godwin of Tampa, Fl., Jonathan Hayden of Columbia, MD, and Robert Hayden of Washington, DC. He also had great joy in seeing his nine grandchildren, Corey and Chelsey Godwin, Bobby and Nathaniel Hayden, Karter and Avery Hayden, and Keagan, Landon, and Brayden Williams.

From 1963-1981 he worked for the Archdiocese of Washington Catholic Youth Organization (CYO). He was a dedicated coach, teacher/principal, motivational speaker, and mentor to many young men and women throughout his life. In 1981 he became a para-legal for the Washington Gas company where he retired after 25 years of service and moved to Lititz, PA, with Ron Patsy, who has been his care giver for 19 years. After becoming a member of AA in 1989, he has been speaking and carrying the message. Many have seen him as a counselor, confidant, and sponsor and all around good caring man who always showed self-sacrifice, wisdom, commitment, respect, and humor. He gave of himself to everyone he met. Since moving to Lititz, he has been an active member of the 521 club and formed many loving and caring friendships.

For Paul,
You were such an inspiration for me, your guidance and wisdom got me to the 521 club night after night.  I hung on your every word and I am glad I was able to tell you how very much you affected my life.  And being the humble man you are, you just smiled and said thank you.  February 11 is six years and I dedicate my coin to you.  Your wisdom and inspiration are going to be missed by many.  I will always think of you as an Angel in heaven with a cup of coffee in your hand.
For Ron and his family, my thoughts and prayers are with you, many people are better because Paul cared.
Love, Mary K. Nafe and Don Shuman

I met Paul and Ron through CBB and immediately fell in love with them. Paul was the kind of guy who was always there to lend a helping hand. I enjoyed many good times with him especially during our many camping trips in the Endless Mountains of Pennsylvania. I am a better man for having known Paul Hayden. My heartfelt sympathy to Ron and Paul’s children and grandchildren. I sure hope St. Peter had a pot of coffee ready when Paul entered the Pearly Gates.

To the family of Paul Hayden,
Ron, you have my deepest sympathy.  Paul was one special guy.  He was a friend, a confidant, a teacher, a trainer, and one who share himself with others in many kind ways.
I pray for your strength, and the strength of his children and their families, and their mother Linda.
May he rest in peace always.  He was an angel to many.
Take care yourself,
Berlinda and Kenny Stanback

Paul will be sorely missed by Ron, his family and his many friends, but also well beyond that wide circle. He was an inspiring leader. While he and Ron lived in Maryland, I witnessed first hand the intensity of his humanitarian ethic as he gave selflessly in leadership roles with two service organizations. Those were just two small parts of his busy, giving life. He spent hours virtually every day counseling and encouraging hundreds of people in their struggles with substance dependency. His sense of humor and story-telling talent were legendary. Most importantly to me, he was a loyal, generous and spirit-bolstering friend. I extend my sincere condolences to Ron, his children and grandchildren and the other members of his family.

During his lifetime, Paul did a lot of good for a lot of people.  I am glad that I got to know him over these past few years.  It had been gut wrenching to watch him suffer this past year.  But now he is free, and he is resting and rejoicing in Heaven, free from all the suffering he endured here on this earth.   My deepest sympathy goes out to Ron Patsy and to Paul’s family.
