Mildred J. Herr, 85
April 09, 2013
Mildred J. (Shenk) Herr, 85, of Landis Homes Retirement Community, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2013 at the hospice center in Mount Joy. She was married to Clyde H. Herr who preceded her in death on September 12, 1993.
Born in Lancaster, Mildred was the daughter of Marion H. Shenk and Oliver Schenck. A 1946 graduate of West Lampeter High School, she continued to enjoy opportunities to grow and learn throughout her life, and instilled the value of education into her children and grandchildren, taking great delight in their educational achievements.
Next to her faith, family was her greatest value. She is survived by three children, Kenneth Herr, married to Elnore (Birkey) of Morgantown; Miriam Nafziger, married to Rodney of Lancaster; and Shirley Mast, married to Cliff, of Lancaster. She took great delight in sharing the lives of her nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, anticipating the birth of the sixth.
She was preceded in death by her only brother, Oliver H. “Sonny” Shenk, married to Carol Ann.
A member of Grace Point Church of Paradise (formerly Paradise Mennonite Church), Mildred was very involved in the activities of the church and mission efforts. Music was her passion. Singing in musical organizations gave her great joy. Recent groups included the Moments of Glad Tidings, Ephrata Cloister Choir, Table Singers, and the choir at Landis Homes. She rarely missed an opportunity to attend a concert, including countless school performances by her children and grandchildren. She instilled her great love of music into her family, a legacy that they will always treasure.
She was employed for many years as a playground aide at Smoketown Elementary School, and also as a tour guide for the Mennonite Information Center for 25 years, where she shared local culture and her faith with countless tourists. She later was also a guide at the Biblical Tabernacle for 11 years, and enjoyed the study involved with that role. During more than 18 years of living at Landis Homes, she was an employee in Life Enrichment, retiring in January of this year. Her work and many volunteer hours incorporated her love of music as she led singing at church services, sang for residents, and shared her music in other ways.
The Memorial Service will take place 3 PM Sunday, April14, 2013, at Landis Homes West Bethany Chapel. Mildred’s family will greet friends at West Bethany Chapel on Saturday from 6-8 PM and 2-3 PM on Sunday. Private Interment in Willow Street Mennonite Cemetery. Ken, Miriam, Shirley & families,
I am sure you have many fond memories of your Mother. She was a special person and touched many lives. she had a great smile and laughter. Blessings, comfort, peace, and strength, as you go through this journey and times of the empty spot that is now there. This is a part of life and the greatest part is that we have that great mansion up above to go to.
Prayers and care,
Anna Petersheim, (cousin)
Miriam and Rodney, condolences on the death of your mother, Mildred Herr.
A mother, regardles of the age of death, is irreplacable, and will be sorely missed. I remember the loss I felt when my mother, Beatrice (Slabaugh) Nafziger, died, and when Brian & Kevin’s mother & my wife, Elfrieda (Toews) Nafziger, died.
Love and condolences from E. Wayne Nafziger

Mildred was a valued member of the Life Enrichment team at Landis Homes for many years. The residents were blessed with Mildred’s beautiful voice as she led hymn sings, and was a member of the Landis Homes Chorus. We will miss her, but rejoice that she is free from pain and in the loving arms of her Lord. May peace and many wonderful memories comfort you.

Dear Family,
The Mennonite Information Center sends condolences to the family of Mildred. Mildred invested many years of herself in the ministry of the MIC, both as a tour guide and as a staff person working inside the Center and giving the Tabernacle lecture. Even though most of us currently at the MIC did not have the privilege of knowing her, a couple of staff did and remember her fondly.
We are thankful for her service in the kingdom of Christ on this earth and know that she is now rejoicing the presence of her Savior and Lord.
Blessings on behalf of all the MIC staff to all of you,
Jeff Landis
MIC Director
