Mary E. Donley, 89
January 22, 1935 - January 16, 2025
Mary E. Donley, born January 22, 1935, in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Ralph E. and Alphia Helen (Garrett) Donley. A faithful servant of her Lord Jesus Christ, Mary departed this Earth for her heavenly home on January 16, 2025, peacefully in her sleep.
Mary was a graduate of Columbia High School, Class of 1955. Mary never married. After her father passed, she spent several years living with her brother’s family and helping to care for his children. Later, she lived in her own apartment and began working for Wendy’s, where she stayed until retirement. Mary was a resident of Lancaster House North Apartments for over 30 years where she was known by many for the colorful, patterned socks she wore. She participated in many activities there, her favorite being Friday night’s dinner & BINGO. Mary frequently signed up for bus trips, which had her touring cities throughout the US. She was also a member of the Lancaster Alpha Social Club and a volunteer at the Lancaster Senior Center.
Mary was an avid learner of scripture study and a regular Sunday School attendee. She grew up attending Wrightsville Assembly of God Church. Later, when she moved to Lancaster, she became a member of Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church, later known as New Life City Church. Mary loved to sing and tap her tambourine, mostly, in time to the music! In recent years, Mary attended the 1st Assembly of God on Columbia Ave. She never missed a chance to attend a church social and loved going out to eat. While she was still getting out and about on her own, Mary daily walked from her apartment to eat her supper at Onions Restaurant. She enjoyed watching her daily shows: The Price is Right, Wheel of Fortune, and Jeopardy. Besides being a faithful member and contributor to her church and missions, Mary was very patriotic and civic minded, contributing to local police and veterans’ organizations.
Mary is survived by her sister, Lois E. Bernhardt, wife of Hank of Lubbock, TX, her nieces and nephews, and best friend, Jeanne, of East Petersburg. She was preceded in passing by her parents, and her brother Ralph Donley, Jr. Mary was dearly loved by her church family and will be missed by many.
