Maria Pelka, 94

June 06, 2020

On Saturday, June 6, 2020, Maria Pelka, loving great-grandmother, entered eternal life at age 94. Known as Mia, she was born on October 4, 1925 in the Netherlands to the late Joannes Leonardus Hubertus Boreas and Anna Gertrud Boreas. Mia was the eldest daughter of eleven children and helped her mother raise all her siblings. In a true ‘love at first sight’ story, she met the late American soldier Edward Stanley Pelka in Netherlands, during WWII. They married in Staten Island, NY in 1947 and raised son Donald, son Jimmy, and daughter Suzanne.

Mia had many passions including her flower garden, cooking and baking, sewing and needlepoint and was proud of her always immaculate clean home. But most of all, she cherished every moment with her children and especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also, all neighborhood children were always welcome at “Grandma’s House” and were treated as her own.

She is survived by her brother, Wil Boreas (husband of Gerty); three children, Donald Pelka (husband of the late Edith), Jimmy Pelka (husband of the late Eva) and Suzanne Parker; six grandchildren, Chris Pelka, Gabriella Gibble (wife of Matt), Jaclyn Albert (wife of Jon), Monica Satkalmi (wife of Vilas), Andrew Parker, and James Parker; seven great-grandchildren, Chloe, Ben, Jillian, Elle, Lainey, Emma, and August; a host of loving nieces and nephews; and her dearest and closest friends of over 60 years, Rose Celardo and daughters.

Services will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mia’s memory may be made to Green Chimneys, 400 Doansburg Rd, Brewster, NY 10509 WWW.GREENCHIMNEYS.ORG/MIA.

Mia and the whole Pelka family is a huge part of my childhood memories, and she will be greatly missed.
My very favorite memory was when she called out to me in the yard, “Hurry! Come and watch my goldfish having babies!”  It was fascinating to me as a child, and I will never forget it.
Rest in Peace, Mia.
