Margaret B. “Peg” Witmer, 94

Margaret B. “Peg” Witmer, 94, of Lancaster, passed away at Hamilton Arms Center on Monday, October 15, following a 6-month illness. Born in Columbia, PA, she was the daughter of the late Henry Bowers (originally Bauer) and Magdalena Thomas Bowers.  All four of Peg’s grandparents were immigrants from Bavaria, Germany, and she enjoyed relating their stories of “the old country” to her children and grandchildren.  As a child and young adult she was a member of “the German church”-Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Columbia, and attended Holy Trinity Elementary / Junior High School.  After graduating from Columbia High School in 1936, she worked in several Columbia garment factories, becoming renowned for her sewing ability.  In 1946, Peg married Harold “Butch” Witmer of Strasburg and Lancaster, whom she had dated before World War II, and whom had just returned home after four years around the world with the U.S. Navy.  Peg worked in the clerical pool at Armstrong Cork Company in Lancaster, and as a volunteer at Sacred Heart School in Lancaster where her children attended. She was a 60-year member of Sacred Heart Church in Lancaster.  Peg enjoyed watching the Phillies, football, golf and ice-skating on T.V., spending time with her family and going to Myrtle Beach.

Besides her parents, Peg was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph Bowers and Henry Bowers, and her husband, Harold B. Witmer, who died in 2002.  Peg is survived by one daughter, Judi A. (James) Turner of Landisville, and two sons, Michael D. (Claudia Demmy) Witmer of Silver Spring, and Patrick J. (Susan Parkinson) Witmer of Allentown; and four grandchildren, Joseph S. Witmer, Ryan P. Witmer and Christina R. Witmer of Allentown, and Nicholas D. Witmer of Silver Spring.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 558 West Walnut St., Lancaster, PA 17603 with Rev. Michael E. Messner as Celebrant.  A viewing will be held from 7-9 PM on Friday, October 19, 2012 at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 414 East King St., Lancaster, PA 17602 with the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 8:30 PM and viewing again from 10-11 AM on Saturday at the church.  Interment will be at Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery, Columbia, PA.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Peg’s memory to the Sacred Heart School Scholarship Fund, 235 Nevin St., Lancaster, PA 17603.  To send the family online condolences, please visit SnyderFuneralHome.com. I’m very sorry to hear about the passing of your Mom.  I hope she was not suffering for too long, and I hope you find some comfort sharing memories with your family and friends. Based on what I read in her obituary, it looks like she lead a very classy life!

My husband worked with Butch for many years at John Herr’s Market so we knew of his wife also. I also would wait on her and Butch at the Country Table Rest. and we saw her there, it seems, not too many months ago with her daughter. We are sending our condolences. Karen and Rick Fralich
