Linda S. Brown, 76

June 07, 2019

Linda S. Brown, 76, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully at Hospice and Community Care on June 7, 2019. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Charles E. and Frances J. (Smith) Book.

Linda worked for many years as a secretary at the former St. Joseph’s Hospital. After retiring, she continued working, selling fine jewelry at JCPenney, and became quite knowledgeable about all kinds of gemstones.

Playing golf was one of Linda’s favorite activities, and played in women’s golf leagues at both Overlook Golf Course and Four Seasons Golf Club. She also enjoyed going on Caribbean cruises with her sister and granddaughters. Linda was an avid reader, and she enjoyed trying new restaurants with her siblings. She will be remembered for her independent spirit and generosity and devotion to her family. She lived by the motto that “it is better to give than to receive”.

Linda is survived by her children Kenneth Gebhard (Karen) of Southport NC, and Tracy Lare (Michael) of Ephrata; her granddaughters Samantha Gebhard and Alexandra Beacham (Devon); great grandson Lucas Beacham; nieces Sue Byorick, Donna Erdman (Michael), Kathy Daminger (Michael), and nephew Charles Book (Helen); and Cooper, her miniature poodle, who is living the good life in Southport NC.

In addition to her parents, she was more recently preceded in death by her brother; Charles W. Book, and sister; Nancy O’Neill, and her three beloved dogs, Heidi, Murphy, and Rachel.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at Brethren Village Retirement Community, 3001 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543, from 10:00AM-11:00AM. A Funeral Service will follow visitation at 11AM at Brethren Village Retirement Community with Rev. Dr. Quentin Wallace officiating. Interment will be in Conestoga Memorial Park, Lancaster, PA. Condolences to the Family

Dear Kenneth and Tracy,
Your mother and I worked together at St. Joseph Hospital. She was a blessing and a “character” to say the least. She never liked to be hugged. For years she would back away when she knew I was about to hug her. Finally, she said, “Oh just hug me!” I did and the hugs were part of us for many years. We met for breakfast with her sister and some other St. Joseph Hospital Friends many times. I loved her so much. She loved our dog Kacie (Bernice Mountain Dog) and asked about her regularly. I am so sorry I missed the service. We were away camping and only learned of her passing the afternoon of June 12. All my love to you and your families.

It was a privilege to work with Linda at JCPenney, but even better was being able to count her as a good friend. We enjoyed sharing memories and books. She was a bright light in my life and will be greatly missed. Fly free dear friend and in my heart you’ll eternally be.
