Lester “Gus” Ira Miller, 73

May 31, 2020

Lester “Gus” Ira Miller passed away on May 31, 2020 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania at the age of 73.

Lester is survived by his wife, Patricia Ann Miller (Foley) of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; son, Eric Andrew Miller, and spouse Kevan Fornasero of San Francisco, California; daughter, Kristin Marie Miller (Taranath), and spouse Abhiman Taranath of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Grandchildren, Vijay Taranath and Maya Taranath; Brothers, Jeffrey Miller and Craig Miller. Lester’s younger sister Brenda K. Miller Hagen passed away in 2017.

Lester was born on July 30th, 1946 in Atglen, Pennsylvania to Ira Miller and Doris Coates. He graduated from West Chester University in 1968 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Arts. After working as a radio announcer and news writer for WJBR-FM in Wilmington, Delaware, Lester began working for WGAL-TV in Lancaster, Pennsylvania as a weather anchor, Three Mile Island accident reporter, and executive producer. Lester married Patricia Ann Foley on October 10, 1970. Lester and Patricia would be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this year. Lester went on to work for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg as the Director of Commonwealth Media Services from 1992-1995.

Lester enjoyed diverse hobbies such as geocaching with his wife, photography, and maintaining their rose garden. He was an avid fan of Jeopardy, reading, classical music, making puns with Patricia, and quietly singing pitch-perfect bass notes while attending choral concerts.

Lester also had a lifelong affection for cats, giving many of them a warm, loving home. To honor that love, we ask that in lieu of flowers that a donation be made in his memory to The Humane League of Lancaster County.

A private burial ceremony is to take place.

He will be sorely missed by all who loved him and called him Pop Pop, Dad, Les and Gus.

So sorry to learn of Gus’s passing. We were close friends sharing a love off folk music, fishing and (unfortunately) smoking. I remember great times with Gus and Tom Davis in Atglen before we lost contact with one another after high school. RIP, my old friend.

Les was a fried and colleague of mine during my early days at Wgal news 8.  He Had a steady, calming  demeanor as an ex producer that was very helpful in a fast paced hectic industry. We will miss him and our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Patrica and family at this time.

I knew Les Miller after his days at WGAL, through his work at Commonwealth Media Services, and at York College and through York County emergency managment.  He was a great man, and a great public servant.  My condolences to his family

So sorry for your loss Eric, Pat and family.  I never met your dad, but I understand he was a wonderful loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.  May Our Lord keep him in His loving care.
Eternal rest grant unto him, oh Lord, and let His perpetual light shine upon him.  May he rest in peace, and may his memory be eternal.  Amen.

So many fond memories from the high school years in the Miller house. Spending countless hours in the basement playing music, Mr. Miller would be in the back room, and every now and then come out to hear what we were up to. I remember watching him at the keyboard as he hunted for the perfect bell sound to end, “Time in a Bottle.” Les Miller was a good, admirable man. Quiet and observant. Gentle and kind. He will be missed. Eternal rest granted upon the soul of Les Miller, and may perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of the faithfully departed rest in peace. Amen.

Dear Dad,
Thank you for being a great father who was always there for me, always supportive, never let me down. For shaping me and influencing my worldview. You’ve always accepted me as I am and never pushed me to be anything different and for all of this I will be forever grateful.
Thank you for being a good husband to Mom and for staying lifetime companions for almost 50 years. Truly an inspiration and definition of marriage.
So many treasured memories that have made our time together so special Dad. This isn’t goodbye as I know your spirit and influence will continue to be with all of us going forward. I wish you peace, and rest. I love you and will miss you always.
Love,
Eric

I am so sorry to hear of Gus’s passing. Please know you all are in my prayers. Gus and a few of us hung out at Bill’s drive in. We would also go to Summer’s cottage at Riverside beach on the Chesapeake bay for weekends. Lots of fond memories.

Dad,
I could hear your deep voice, I see you mowing the lawn, ensuring that it just perfect or you sitting on the porch of the house enjoying your time. Also making your delicious match potatoes and your buttery barbecue chicken. It make me smile just to think about it.
Dad I will not forget you!
You are in my heart.Thanks.
Love Romi.
