Kathryn (Rhoades) Mehaffey, 94

Kathryn (Rhoades) Mehaffey, 94, of Lancaster passed away Monday, May 27, 2008 at Moravian Manor Nursing Home. Born in Lancaster she was the daughter of the late Allen Balmer and Sarah (Duncan) Rhoades. She was the wife of the late Chester Mehaffey.

Kathryn and her husband were the owners and operators of the Eden Hotel. They made the hotel the hub of the community. Before the Eden Fire Company’s dispatch system was organized a bartender from the hotel situated less than a block from the fire hall, used to receive calls and direct volunteers to the fire.

Food from the hotel was always ready for the firefighters when they returned from a fire, and often food would be sent directly to the fire scene, feeding volunteers who happened to be assisting.

Kathryn was a long time member of St. James Episcopal Church. She enjoyed boating and was a member of the Wellwood Yacht Club.

She is survived by a son, Thomas Mehaffey husband of Rose of Lancaster. 3 grand children; Brian Mehaffey of Lancaster, Michael Mehaffey husband of Kim of Lititz, and Michelle Mehaffey of Florida. 3 great grandchildren; Chase Mehaffey of Lancaster, Amber Phillips of New York, and Courtney Esbenshade of Lancaster.

A Funeral Service will be held Friday, May 30 ,2008 at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home 414 E. King St. Lancaster 17602 at 2 p.m. Friends will be received at the funeral home before the service from 1-2 p.m. Interment will be at Millersville Mennonite Cemetery.
