Joseph H. Neidig, 93
March 11, 2022
Joseph Harold (Joe) Neidig, 93, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania died on March 11, 2022.
Joe was an educator and school administrator. For two years in the 1960’s he taught in the Marshall Islands and travelled around the world before returning to Ohio. Joe retired from the Department of Defense in Pensacola, Florida and later moved to Lancaster to live near his son. Joe loved fishing, tennis, and rooting for his Ohio State football teams. He ran 2 marathons when he was over 50 and volunteered helping rescue animals until he was 90 years old.
Preceding Joe in death were his foster parents Howard and Mae Lingrel, his wife Marilyn, his son Joseph Michael (Mike), and his siblings David, Betty, and Virginia. Joe is survived by his daughter-in-law Judy Neidig of Lancaster, sisters-in-law Bea Williamson of New Bloomington, Ohio and Maxine Wilgus of Sunriver, Oregon, numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends.
Joe will always be remembered as a kind gentleman who loved animals. He will be sadly missed by his family, his many friends and all their pets. Memorial gifts if desired may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Burial will be private at Bayview Memorial Park in Pensacola.

My memories of Joe are filled with positive thoughts of his acceptance, his warmth, his generosity, his joy of life, his love of dogs, his dedication of friendship showed consistently over many years.

Joe was such a kind soul and a great neighbor. He was quite young at heart, broad-minded and savvy of current issues. I’ll always remember when Joe gave me a tour of his apartment and he told a story of every one of his treasured keepsakes and photos. He was so proud of his beautifully decorated (by Judy) apartment. He was a friend to all, including all animals, and particularly to dogs and cats. I will miss seeing and speaking with Joe. I hope that Joe is now surrounded by all his (both 2-legged and 4-legged) loved ones who passed before him.

It was my pleasure to speak with Joe during the months of January, February and early March on behalf of the Downtowners. Joe was easy to talk to. He was open and friendly sharing the events of his life. I was sadened when I heard of his passing and I will miss our conversations. Mike Hayes

Joe showed joy in his soul even as his body failed. He loved talking about his beloved pit bull, and house-sitting for a friend with 8 cats and 4 dogs. He praised in detail the Valentine’s Day dinner put on by the facility. Joe overcame a bleak childhood to become a treasured friend. His legacy will bless many lives. – Frederick Poorbaugh

I knew Joe only through his loved ones, but what love there was! I hope that the holes in your hearts will grow smaller in time.

I really did not have an opportunity to get to know Joe, unfortunately. He sounds like an interesting and caring person.

Joe was one of the kindess people I have ever met. I never saw him when he wasn’t smiling. He always looked on the bright side of things and of people. I volunteered with him at the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County where he was a hard worker and loved by all. He will be missed.

Lancaster will be a little dimmer without him. I’ll miss his stories of the bayou and tales of squirrel antics. Thank you for entrusting me with his care; it was a joy to know him. Joe, you have a gift of making everything seem so easy (even when it wasn’t). Peace to you, your family, and friends❤️🩹 Kristen Nebel

I worked with Joe at NETPMSA, Saufley Field for 6 years and we played tennis until he moved to Lancaster. Joe and his dog Cloie were known by all at PAC. He was a caring man and would lend a helping hand to anyone in need. A thousand words are not enough to describe Joe. He will be missed. RIP Joe. Charles Nierling

Joe was a light in our lives and led by example. His kindness, serenity, and compassion for both four legged and two legged strays made our lives better for having had the privilege of knowing him.
Our hearts go out to Judy and the rest of his family. Susan and Gary Leinberger
