John Robert Herr Jr., 73

October 25, 2021

John Robert Herr, Jr, (Bob), 73, died October 25 after a battle with abdominal cancer. Bob was born March 30, 1948, to J. Robert and Lois Martin Herr. He leaves behind his wife and partner of 46 years, Judy Zimmerman Herr.

Bob grew up in Southern Lancaster County and graduated from Lancaster Mennonite High School in 1966. After two years at Eastern Mennonite College in Harrisonburg, VA, he graduated from Goshen (IN) College in 1972. He later earned an MA in Economic and Social Development from the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs of the University of Pittsburgh.

Much of Bob’s career focused on international relief and development work with the Mennonite Central Committee. He first served in MCC’s PAX program in France from 1968-70, in lieu of military service. He and Judy taught school in Malawi from 1975-78, and worked in South Africa from 1982-86 and in Botswana from 1987-91. Their last international placement was as directors for MCC’s work in East Africa, based in Nairobi, Kenya, from 2009-2014.

Bob and Judy worked together in the MCC office in Akron, PA as directors for MCC’s International Peace Office from 1991-2007, providing leadership in MCC’s peacebuilding work. From 2003 onwards, they also helped in developing MCC’s international planning, monitoring and reporting system. From 2007-09, they pioneered a new department within MCC to provide technical support for program work.

After retiring from MCC in 2014, Bob worked part time for the Mennonite World Conference and as an interim Director for the Nazareth Project, supporting the work of the Nazareth Hospital in Israel. He joined Judy in several writing projects.

Bob was an active member of East Chestnut Street Mennonite Church, where he taught in the adult Sunday School for many years and served on the church board. He enjoyed being part of the Lancaster Downtowners, an organization of older persons supporting one another in Lancaster. He volunteered at the Fulton Theater, and had hoped to help with the African American Historical Society walking tours.

Friends and co-workers remember Bob as a curious and engaging person. His eagerness to learn about new places and people led him to work in Africa, and to travel widely in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. He was a news junkie, following daily newscasts and regularly reading various newspapers. We will miss his welcoming grin, his thoughtful comments on ethical and theological issues, his dry humor, and his silly magic tricks. We’ll also miss his culinary specialties: spaghetti sauce, crunchy granola, and “Uncle Bob’s apple pie.”

In addition to his wife Judy, Bob leaves behind two sons, Mark Zimmerman Herr of Minneapolis, MN and Daniel Zimmerman Herr, with girlfriend Lia Yin, of Boston, MA. He is survived by his siblings: Doris (Marlin) Thomas of Willow Street; Joyce Bomberger (John) Landis of Lancaster; Donald E. (Deb) Herr of Willow Street; Mervin R. Smucker (Ann Hostetler) of Dresden, Germany and Goshen, IN; Marlin (Damaris) Melo-Smucker of Lancaster; Carolyn (Barry) Bauer of Lancaster; Cindy (Harold) Shellenberger of Mount Joy; and Joanne (Fred) Good of New Holland, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is pre-deceased by his step mother, Mary Glick Smucker Herr, brother-in-law Robert Bomberger, and sister-in-law Kate Herr.

A memorial service will take place Saturday, October 30 at 3 pm with visitation beginning at 2 pm, at East Chestnut Street Mennonite Church, 432 E Chestnut St, Lancaster, PA 17602. Masks are required.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in Bob’s memory may be sent to Mennonite Central Committee, PO Box 500, Akron, PA 17501-0500, or to the Lancaster Downtowners, 118 N Water Street, Suite 103 Lancaster, PA 17603. For those not able to attend, here is our Zoom link. The passcode: 606

Dear Judy and family
I just found out about the passing of Bob, and was able to watch the tribute video. We were neighbors to the Herr famil
y since 1953, then purchased their home on Truce rd. in August 1969. The video has shown my wife and I that your family has been blessed with helping many lives around the globe. May all find peace.

I have fond memories of Bob Herr from our painting days together working for Chick Lance.  Bob later lived with us, my late wife Fern and 2 children, Jodi and Darin, (they are now in their 50s) also with another single friend, Crick, Shirley Christophel.  My sister, Peggy lived with Judy Zimmerman at the time in Goshen, IN

Dear Judy,
Patrice and I send our l deepest condolences in Bob’s death.  Bob and your contributions to MCC have been enormous.  It was my privilege to have shared a part of that time with the two of you.  Thank you. One of the things I appreciated about Bob’s was humble and unassuming demeanor which, for some, may have belied the breadth of his wisdom.  His commitment and love for the church, both local and global, guided much of his work and thinking. The global Anabaptist community is richer because of Bob’s contributions.  Our prayers and best wishes for you, Judy, as you carry on.

Hello Judy, and the extended family,
We are so sorry to hear of Bob’s passing.
The twinkle in the eye — when he had just thought of a good pun, the hat, the pensive faraway look, these are all aspects of Bob that we remember and cherish. We had the privilege to live in Nairobi Kenya at the same time that you, Bob and Judy, served as East Africa Area Directors for MCC and were our supervisors. We so appreciated Bob’s (and Judy’s) thoughtful and measured advice, a keen sense of humour, a commitment to following Jesus’ teaching and example. We pray Aaron’s blessing for you as quoted in Numbers – The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

Judy
I am sorry to learn of Bob’s death. You and Bob were a steady and strong presence in the 12th Street office where I worked from 1992-2004. It is hard to imagine Bob not here on earth any longer…but his legacy of peace building continues. May God be near you this time.

Dear Judy,   I am so sorry to hear of Bob’s passing.   As you know Bob and I go back to EMC and Goshen as well years in Pax.  Bob invited me to spend Christmas with him in France.   Our paths crossed in Goshen and again in Kenya years ago.  Bob was fine communicator and ready to talk about everything.   The was a great friend.   We even overhauled his VW motor once.   The other thing was a trip to KEY West where we slept on the beach.   We were a couple shaggy hired guys in a VW.   All the best to you.

Dear Judy,
I had the wonderful pleasure of meeting you and Bob for the first time in September 2019 when you stayed in l’ancienne mairie, our family and friends guest wing of our house in Beaumont du Ventoux. It was a great experience to sit and chat with you and also to meet Daniel. The Quaker and Mennonite connection has always been close and Bob clearly had a great life. I am happy to have your photos in the visitor’s book – I will be thinking of you all with much love and prayers for a more peaceful world, Pat

Hello, Judy, Mark, Daniel and Herr family all!
Thank you so much for the touching account of Bob’s leave-taking.  There could hardly be a richer parting than to receive release and blessing from a loved one.  Such grace is consonant with the life-long witness we observed in Bob, and surely will undergird all who now feel his absence.
We recall with appreciation the many ways Bob and you contributed to our lives as colleagues in southern Africa.  Yes, your friendship as neighbors, but also the far-sighted vision Bob brought to our conversations about racial justice and what we owed to those who bore apartheid’s burdens. Your witness to that region’s churches underscoring the Gospel call to wakefulness and action embodied some of the best of Anabaptist presence.
The Tswana saying of consolation at such moments is ‘Modimo o teng’ (God is near.). In this news about Bob, we sense that nearness, and wish for you a full measure of comfort in the Spirit.

Good morning Judy…..
This morning, Elaine and I read about Bob’s passing.  We want to acknowledge your loss.
My most recent memories of you and Bob are from your time as Area Directors in Africa.  They are very good memories. I appreciated the quiet strength you exuded as a couple, and your overall contribution to program and to the relationships on which it depends.
We hope that you are well and that you have friends and family around you during this very difficult time.
Know that you are appreciated and loved, if even from a distance.
We wish you peace
Don (for Elaine)

I extend sympathy to all my cousins and Bob’s wife Judy. One by one we go. I recall childhood fun of kick the can, baseball and beckon!  May God comfort you in this unexpected loss, I pray. Rachel Frey
