John R. “Jack” Longenecker, 82

John R. “Jack” Longenecker, 82, of Lancaster, died Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at Landis Homes.  Born in Lancaster, Jack was the son of the late Chauncey W. and M. Louise (Smith) Longenecker.

A 1946 graduate of J. P. McCaskey High School, Jack attended Temple University, where he graduated with a B. S. in pharmacy in 1950.  A US Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict, Jack served as a pharmacist at Philadelphia Naval Hospital, and in Port Lyautey, French Morocco.  Jack returned home after his tour in the navy to begin his life-long pharmacy career in the family business, Longenecker’s Pharmacy.  Even though he was diagnosed with M.S. while in the military, Jack continued working in the family business until his retirement in 1980, having shared his duties with his brother, Jim, and sister, Bette.

Jack was a life member, and was very active in the Wheatland Sertoma Club, a 32nd degree member of the Lamberton Lodge No. 476 F&AM, a member of the Lancaster Co. Shrine Club, a member of Zembo Shrine A.A.O.N.M.S., Harrisburg, and a member of the Oriental Band.

He was a life-long member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Lancaster.

Jack was an avid sports fan who enjoyed watching Penn State Football, and the Phila. Eagles and Phillies games.

Jack is survived by a daughter, Anne I. Davis of Vallejo, CA, grandson, Jeremy Davis of Napa, CA, sister, Bette Forsythe, of Malvern, PA, and brother, James “Jim” Longenecker, husband of Veronica, of Lancaster.  In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by two sons, Curtis W. and John Longenecker.
