John A. Donahue, 86
February 01, 2024
John A. Donahue, age 86, passed away on February 1, 2024 surrounded by his family. Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Edward and Elizabeth (McCain) Donahue. He was the devoted husband of Barbara (Garrett), with whom he spent over 55 wonderful years.
John proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for 4 years. He went to work for General Electric Space in King of Prussia where he met his future wife. He then went to work for White/Whiddett as a manufacturer’s rep and office manager until retirement. He loved history, especially the Civil War, and that spurred him on to volunteer at Gettysburg National Military Park. He spent years sharing his enthusiasm and knowledge to visitors from not only around the country, but around the world. In addition to history, he loved Philadelphia sports. He also loved coaching his children and young kids in the Broomall Little League.
John will be remembered for his love of family, his great sense of humor and quick wit.
In addition to his beloved wife Barbara of Lancaster, John is survived by his children: Kevin Donahue of Charlotte, N.C. and Jody Mawson (Ken) of Coatesville, PA; his grandchildren: Kylee, Erin and Shawn; his siblings: Ed Donahue, Julia O’Donnell (Frank), Mary Kelly (Joe) and Pat Donahue as well as many nieces and nephews.
John is preceded in death by his sister Bettie Drennen.
Family will receive friends on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 119 S Prince St, Lancaster, PA 17603 from 10am to 11am with a Funeral Mass to begin at 11am. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

Condolences to the Family

I am very sorry to read about Mr Donahue’s passing. I met John while visiting the Gettysburg battlefield a few years ago. My friend Todd and I spoke with him at length on a variety of topics related to the battle. In fact, he even showed us the detailed information he had compiled on various regiments from each state. It was an honor to meet John and my sincere condolences go out to his family and friends.
