Joan L. Berdiner, 96
June 16, 2024
On Sunday June 16th, 2024, Joan L. Berdiner, 96, passed away surrounded by her loving family. Joan was born to George and Sara (Davidson) Campbell in Mahanoy City, Schuylkill County PA. She was married for 70 wonderful years to Paul Berdiner who passed away in 2015.
During the 1950s and 60’s Joan worked as a geriatric nurse and came to recognize the need for a different type of care that was not available to seniors at that time. So, in 1970 she and Paul opened Brereton Manor Personal Care Home in Manor Twp. They continued to operate the home for the next forty years where they offered the elderly a safe loving community while providing daily assistance and care. It was always important to Joan that Brereton Manor felt warm and welcoming to all that entered the home.
Joan and Paul were active members of Grace United Methodist Church since 1968. Joan served on many committees, especially the Mission Thrift Shop where she could spend time with her church friends and meet new friends while serving the community.
Perhaps the greatest legacy that Joan leaves is that of being a caring loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend to many. She is survived by her children Joan A Segro, Lititz, Raymond Berdiner, Flagler Beach, FL, George Berdiner (Cathy), Millersville and Boni Zeigler, Manor Twp.
Grandchildren, Steve Segro, Matt Segro, Lisa (Jeff) Peters, Paul Berdiner, Tim Berdiner, Sara and Shanna Berdiner and Scott and Jon Zeigler.
Great Grandchildren, Colin, Cole and Quinn Peters, Gabe, Evie, Callie Segro, Chase, and Laine Berdiner.
We also would like to thank the staff and residents of Oakleaf Manor South for their kindness and care during mom’s time with them.
Our Mother was a loving, kind welcoming person and will be in our hearts forever.
Funeral Services will be held at 11AM on Monday, June 24, 2024, at Millersville Community Church, 163 W. Frederick St, Millersville, PA 17551. Interment to follow in the adjoining church cemetery. Family and friends will be received from 6-8PM on Sunday, June 23, 2024, at Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 441 N. George St, Millersville, PA 17551 and again from 10-11AM at the church on Monday. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Joan’s memory may be made to the church at the above address.

Dear Berdiner Family, I was saddened to read of Joan’s passing. She was such an amazing woman, that I had the privilege to work for at Brereton Manor. She had such a heart for the elderly people and the ones that worked for her. I was very blessed to be a part of the workers. May God give you comfort and peace as you say “good-by” to your beloved mother, grandmother.

My deepest sympathies to the Berdiner and Segro families. I loved your mother and grandmother like my own. Actually she was like a second grandmother to me any many kids in the Letort neighborhood. I have so many fond memeories of the caring, loving and compassionate person she was. She touched my life and I will surely miss her even though us kids had moved on with our lives. She is definatly an angel and will be watching over all of us. She is now with her beloved husband Paul. RIP

I absolutely loved Mrs. Berdiner. She always said please don’t call me Mrs. Berdiner – please call me Joan, but I just didn’t do well catching on to that. I have been blessed to know her and to spend time “sipping tea” with good conversation. She was a true witness of her faith to all of us who knew her. I am saddened – yet rejoicing that she is now home with Jesus and also her husband Paul. I am keeping you all in prayer as you grieve the days ahead.
Love and Blessings, Mary Burger

Your mother/grandmother has been my mentor, inspiration, hero and angel from the day she decided to take a chance on me as the next owner of Brereton Manor. Because of her words “Always do what’s best for Brereton.”, for years after her absence, residents and families continued to receive the finest care. Her philosophies were taught across the state at many administrator conferences. Many homes, both large and small, adopted her methods. She set a standard for senior care that was respected by our State inspectors, emulated by many providing care and appreciated by residents and families fortunate to receive that care. She is an angel who walked the earth. She just didn’t wear her wings were all could see them!

To the Family of dear Joan,
My sister, Kathleen Diehl, worked with Joan at Brereton Manor as her Nurse, and kept her remembrance in her heart until her own departure for ‘Home’ in 2022. Through Kathy, I learned that this sweet woman was more than a working associate to Kathy, but rather a friend throughout their lives on this earth. May the Lord Jesus Christ be your comfort and strength throughout these days of mourning, and beyond. My heartfelt sympathy to you all on this great loss to your family.
