Jeffrey R. “Jeff” Ostrowski, 58

February 28, 1962 - November 21, 2020

Jeffrey “Jeff” Ostrowski, age 58, passed away peacefully at home on November 21st surrounded by his family.

Jeff was born in Wilson, NC in 1962 and was raised in Lancaster, PA. Over the last 23 years, he was a resident of Glen Mills, PA. Jeff graduated from Lancaster Catholic High School in 1980 and Juniata College in 1984. Juniata is where Jeff met Peggy Evans, the one person on campus who was more competitive than him. They were married in 1988 and welcomed their son Curt in 1996 and their daughter Carly in 1998.

Jeff had a knack for making people better—whether it was family, friends, colleagues, or patients. He became a Physical Therapist in order to help others live a more functional and pain-free life, but what the profession got out of Jeff was even more. Jeff graduated Summa Cum Laude from Thomas Jefferson University School of Physical Therapy in 1986. In 1990, Jeff Co-founded Excel Physical Therapy in Philadelphia. In 2011, Excel merged with Apex Physical Therapy to become E&A Therapy Inc., where Jeff was the Managing Partner to the 35 Excel clinics in the Philadelphia region.

As a leader in the industry and an advocate for developing exemplary physical therapists, Jeff was the Southeast District (SED) Director of the Pennsylvania Physical Therapy Association (PPTA) from 2011-2015 and the Director of the American Physical Therapy Association’s (APTA) Private Practice Section (PPS) from 2011-2017. Whether it was a CEO of a healthcare company or a PT Aide, Jeff treated every individual with dignity and respect, and understood that they all had an equal share of value in this profession. Jeff has contributed to the advancement of physical therapy through mentorship and education as both an employer, a colleague, and an adjunct professor at Drexel University. In addition, Jeff was the Editor of the APTA PPS magazine, IMPACT, for over five years and an author of numerous articles. Jeff has been attributed to the growth of not only his clinics, but of his colleagues and employees. He has motivated and pushed them out of their comfort zone to be the best version of themselves, professionally and personally, and was most recently awarded the 2019 PPTA Service Award.

Jeff has always been a dedicated fitness and health enthusiast. Before each of his cancer treatments, he would get down and crank out 50 pushups, inspiring everyone around him. Throughout his years, if he wasn’t on his road bike or playing at the local volleyball sand courts, you could find him in his driveway shooting hoops with Curt or passing the volleyball in the backyard with Carly and Peggy. Jeff treasured the time spent watching his daughter play competitive volleyball at Villa Maria Academy and presently at Franklin & Marshall College where Carly is a team captain. Not far from the volleyball courts at F&M, Curt was studying at Millersville University gaining his Certification in Integrated Studies and was featured in the University’s documentary about the program. The accomplishments of Curt and Carly in their college careers had brought Jeff and Peggy back to Lancaster where they enjoyed spending more time over the recent years. Jeff and Peggy are so proud of their children and being close to them just made sense.

Jeff was a member at Concord Country Club where he enjoyed golfing with Peggy and participating in the Men’s book club he started several years ago. As an avid NASCAR fan, Jeff enjoyed traveling to races with his brothers. He and his brothers, Jim and Dan would race to complete the NYT crossword every Sunday morning, comparing their speed and accuracy. Jeff enjoyed hosting many dinner parties with Peggy at their home, where you would find discussions from book recommendations, to planning a trip to the next concert, and thoughtful political discourse between friends, colleagues, and neighbors. Jeff was a great listener and was interested in all opinions and points of view. But more than that, Jeff had an eloquent way of explaining his thoughts in the most respectful and well-informed manner.

Jeff treasured spending time with his family at OBX every summer. Jeff’s favorite activities were flying his trick kite, listening to music, and 5 pm Gin Martinis with his Dad and brothers. Family was everything to Jeff, and each of them had a crucial part in who he was as a person. Lynne, the only sister, was the life of the party and kept the family close together. Jeff has deeply valued the memorable conversations and advice exchanged with Lynne throughout the years. He admired all of his brothers; Jim, Dan, his older brother Mike, who had Jeff’s unwavering respect, and his younger brother, Andy, whom Jeff would do anything for. His parents, Joan and Hugh, were adored and admired through all of their sacrifices and for instilling in him the importance of family values and love, which they passed on to their children.

There is no doubt that Jeff has worked extremely hard his entire life, but he has always made time to create extraordinary memories with his family, close friends, and neighbors. He has made a positive impact on more lives than he would ever take credit for. And for that and more, his family and friends cherish all the beautiful years that Jeff has been present with them on Earth. They know that Jeff will continue his positive influence on their lives while looking down from heaven.

Jeff is survived by his wife of over 32 years, Peggy Evans; his children, Curtis and Carly; his parents, Joan and Hugh Ostrowski; his brothers, Mike (Lorraine), Jim (Marcia), Andy, Dan (Melissa), and his sister, Lynne Groff (Brian).

There will be a private family funeral held in Lancaster PA. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in Glen Mills, PA. In lieu of flowers please donate to the Villa Fund at Villa Maria Academy High School 370 Central Ave, Malvern, PA 19355 or online at www.vmahs.org. The funds will be used to upgrade the Athletic Training Department as per Jeff’s wishes.

Condolences to the Family

June 02, 2021

My name is Sabrina Mele and I am now a physical therapist at a local hospital based outpatient clinic.  I became a PT because my identical twin sister became very well acquainted with Excel as as grade school and high school student.  She always raved about how successful Jeff and joe were in cofounding Excel and would sing their praises as a little girl.  Four years into my career,  I decided to interview with Excel and I had the wonderful privelege of interviewing with Jeff.  He was so very humble and very professionally complimentary about how I responded to his interview questions.  “What percentile were you in your class, you are so knowledgeable for having only four years under your belt?”  My sister and I will never forget the impression he made on us and I am deeply saddened to hear about the news of his passing.  Prayers and healing thoughts to his beautiful family,
Sabrina Mele, PT, DPT

My deepest condolences to the entire Ostrowski family. Jeff hired me on as a PT Aide back in 2012 in Cherry Hill, NJ. I’ll never forget how down to Earth he was. Professional through and through but approachable. He was tough but fair. I’ll never forget the 2012 Excel PT Christmas party where he walked around with a Bud Light in hand while his employees drank craft beers. Made me chuckle. RIP, Jeff. The PT world lost a giant.

I first met Jeff at a PT convention in 2011 and had an opportunity to “learn” from him in 2012.  Jeff was a teacher, a mentor, and most importantly a friend.  Hearing of his passing broke my heart and I send thoughts and prayers all of you. Rest In Peace Jeff.

The memories are endless and bring a smile to my face. I have so much respect for Jeff and his character and courage.  So sorry for your loss.  God Bless.  Peace be with you.

When I first joined the private practice section of the APTA and went to my first conference in 2002 I briefly met Jeff Ostrowski.
In those early years I heard him speak and I said to myself, this is a leader I want to emulate.  Jeff was a rare individual that elegantly bridged the gap between the people side and the business side of the equation.
Years later at another PPS, Mike Horsefield brought me into a conference suite to beta test the Peer2Peer mastermind group.  I walked in and Jeff was standing in the room.  I felt like I hit the lottery.  We became close friends over the years and I always left his presence inspired.  Jeff made you feel seen.  He recognized the gifts and talents in those around him and gave them confidence to be even better.  My friendship with Jeff was a transformative one, our conversations made me always want to be the best version of myself.  Jeff will be missed terribly and if we can all be a little more like Jeff the world will be a better place.  My heart goes out to Peggy and his children Curtis and Carly.  Rest in peace my friend.  Thank you for all you gave of yourself and the fine example you set for us.

Dear Peggy and family,
I had the privilege of meeting Jeff many years ago at an annual PPS conference. Although I have many fond memories, the one that sticks out to me is the conversation we had some 5-6 years back when we were at a peer conference during the end of March madness. My daughter who is now 13 just started playing basketball and Jeff and I spoke for 30 minutes about how I could be a solid role model to her. I wish I had gotten a known Jeff even better and I’m saddened by his passing. I just became aware this morning and wanted to share what an impact he had on my life.  Truly,  one of the GREAT ones!

Dear Joan and Hugh, Mike, Jim, Andy, Lynn and Dan,
I can only say how sorry I am for the passing of Jeff. I had to find and read the obituary numerous times to believe what had been told.
All my years teaching at SLS are full of good memories. Jeff was a special  person in the way he always gave his best and was a help to all around him . This seemed to be only a small part of the great life he continued after moving into adulthood.
I pray for your peace and consolation as you continue to celebrate his blessed life.
To Peggy, Curtis and Carly,
Although Jeff achieved much , you are surely his greatest gift. Peace be with you.

Mr. & Mrs. Ostrowski and Ostrowski Family,
I want to pass on my sympathy for Jeff’s passing. I know the past few years have been a battle for him and he fought courageously. As corny as it may sound, Jeff was a hero to me my freshman year in high school. He was the “cool” and “stud” basketball player that I wanted to be when I became a senior. He was the role model that everyone looked up to.
I know he carried these same traits to his playing days at Juniata and most certainly carried this on to his proffesional career. His passion for helping others was evident throughout his entire life. I know he will be missed by so many family, friends and coworkers.
Again, my sympathies and the best wishes to the entire Ostrowski family.
Steve Kirchner

November 28, 2020

Please accept my most sincere condolences. Jeff and I were friends in high school, especially senior year. I was the varsity basketball team statistician, and Jeff and I were suspended, along with several others, for publishing The Hades Gazette.
I cherish those memories, of Jeff’s friendship and quiet dignity. A good and most decent man, and it is my great honor to say he was my friend.

Peggy, Curt, and Carly,
I am so very sorry for your loss!  What a beautiful tribute to Jeff.  He was a great person and next door neighbor.  My son, Shaun, would come home from visiting with Curt and just rave about how Curt spoke so highly of his father.  Shaun would also talk about all the activities/sports that Mr. Ostrowski would be involved in and how committed to health he was.  Unbeknownst to many, Jeff made an impact on Shaun as he inspired him to be more health conscious just by him modeling his enthusiasm for health and fitness.  Jeff’s soul may now reside in Heaven, but his spirit will continue to live through his family!  Jeff will never be gone, just gone before!  May he rest easy!  With love and prayers to all!  Sue, Bob, Josh, and Shaun Elliott

November 24, 2020

Peggy- I’ve had Jeff, you and the kids in my prayers over this past year and it breaks my heart to hear this news. Words cannot express the sadness in my heart.  Jeff’s obituary was beautiful and he will truly be missed but his impact on people’s lives will live on. My prayer is for Jesus to comfort you and the kids through this time and in the coming years. Even though Jeff is physically no longer with you he lives inside Curt and Carly.  One of my favorite Bible versus is Psalms 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God.”  It may feel God is far away but take time to be still and wait on him. He will draw near to you and comfort you.  With all my love, Paula.

November 24, 2020

Condolences to the family.  I have such high respect for Jeff, his contributions to the PT profession, and his impact on private practice. His influence on me personally is profound; and I can’t express the gravity his impact had on so many lives.  He loved his family and spoke often about the impact Peggy and his kids had on his view of the world.  With a heavy heart I write this, and I send much love to you.

Dear Peggy, Curtis and Carly. My name is Stephen Murawski. In November, 1996 Inwas hired by Jeff to work at the Society Hill Clinic. Over the time I worked there as a PY Aide, I saw how hard Jeff worked to be great at his craft, inspire our patients and cultivate the staff into a well oiled machine. He Always had an open door and was eager to hear about anything about your life. He offered solid advice whether it pertained to the job or life. We used to practice putting during down times and talk about anything from sports to history. He was very proud of you all, his family, and spoke of you often.  I left Excel/Rothman in 2013 and have taken the same values and skills that Jeff helped me become more proficient at and opened my own business. As I reflect on the time spent working with Jeff and his mentoring, I am comforted in having gotten to know him. I believe I earned his respect and admiration and that meant a lot to me. I wish you all peace and comfort as you grieve but in time you also with be comforted in remembering all the love and fun you had. God Bless and May Jeff ready in peace. Sincerely, Stephen Murawski
