Jean D. Martin, 80
December 13, 2017
Jean D. Martin of Lancaster passed away on December 13, 2017, at the age of 80, after a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born in Lancaster on February 15, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Hulbert Weimer Dysinger and Mary Quigley (Austin) Dysinger.
Jean was a graduate of Penn Manor High School and Millersville State College, where she also received her PA Certification as a Reading Specialist. She served for 30 years teaching in the School District of Lancaster. She began her career at McCaskey High School as a reading teacher, then decided to transfer to Reynolds Middle School where she hoped to make a difference earlier in the lives of students.
During her school years, Jean played field hockey and softball. She loved watching various sports on television, and especially loved going to the girls and boys basketball games at McCaskey.
An active volunteer throughout her adult life, Jean served as a Girl Scout leader, church youth group leader, Sunday School teacher, and the leader of the Service Clubs at both of the buildings in which she worked. It was later called AIM (Action in McCaskey). In January 1993, she was presented the Service To Mankind Award by the Conestoga Sertoma Club. She was also an active member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Lancaster. She loved the beach, the mountains, hiking segments of the Appalachian Trail, and vacationing in Maine, especially York Beach and Bar Harbor. She was a daredevil who enjoyed the wildest rides at Rocky Springs, Hershey Park and Knoebel’s. She loved all animals, especially her many cats.
Jean is survived by two daughters, Joan Martin and her husband Andy, and Diane Dangro, and her husband William, both of Lancaster; and a son, Bill Martin, of Elizabethtown. She is also survived by
five grandchildren, Shawn Martin and his wife Quin; Kyra Martin; Lindsay Dangro; Lauren Dangro Alsop and her husband Justin; and Joshua Dangro, and his wife Jennifer; three great-grandchildren, Haylee Dangro, Willow Justine Martin and Violet Austin Martin; as well as many cousins who were like siblings to her. She was preceded in death by three uncles, five aunts and one cousin.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2018, at 2:00 PM at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 500 Pearl Street, Lancaster, PA, 17603, where the family will receive guests beginning at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jean’s memory may be made to Compassus of Lancaster, 2101 Oregon Pike, Suite 301, Lancaster, PA, 17601, or to Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org
