James D. McMahon, 86

James D. McMahon, 86, of Manheim Township died Saturday, May 13, 2017. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Eva and Frank McMahon. Jim was the husband of Dianne McMahon, with whom he celebrated 24 years of marriage.
Jim was a proud member of the United States Marine Corps during the Korean conflict from 1948-1953 serving at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, Brooklyn Navy Yard, NATTC in Memphis, and as an Embassy Security Guard in Bogota, Colombia in his last two years. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant.
Later, he graduated from Franklin & Marshall College with a degree in American History. He served on the Lancaster City Police force from 1954-1962, then retired from the Internal Revenue Service 25 years later in 1987.
Jim was a member of the American Legion, the Marine Corps League and Devil Dogs, and both third and fourth degrees of the Knights of Columbus. He grew up in St. Anthony’s parish and was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters: Donna McMahon of the San Francisco bay area; Kathleen, wife of Michael Williams; Erin, wife of Charles Kneasel; and a son, James D. McMahon Jr., PhD husband of Lois Miklaus. He is also survived by two step-daughters: Gina, wife of Randy Hecker, Margie, wife of Chris Clark; five grandchildren: Jon Cox, Tara Erkinger, Kathryn McMahon, Courtney Peters, and Bradley Williams; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Eugene and his sister, Mary Jane.
Friends and Relatives are invited to attend Jim’s Funeral Mass at 2PM on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 501 E. Orange St, Lancaster, PA 17602. An invitation to greet the family will be at the church from 1PM until the time of the service. Interment in Mellinger Mennonite Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Marine Corps League Devil Dogs, PO Box 227, Columbia, PA 17512 or Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors, Inc., 1117 Country Club Rd, Camp Hill, PA 17011.

Sorry to hear of Jim’s passing. I worked with Jim for 9 years at the Lancaster IRS. He was my coach when I started with the IRS. He would tell us stories of his time as an Embassy guard. I never saw him much after I left the IRS in 1980, but I remember him well. I am sure he will be missed by his family and friends. Doug Eaby
