James Claude Powell of Marietta, a distinguished crime writer known for his captivating short stories, passed away peacefully on October 11, 2024, at the age of 92 in Lititz, PA. Born in Ontario, he was the son of Arthur Wm Fred Powell and Loretto A. Bindner.
James leaves behind his loving wife of 40 years, Mary Lou Fletcher-Powell, and a legacy in the world of mystery literature. His career as a writer was marked by numerous publications in Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, where his talent for crafting intricate, suspenseful and humorous narratives flourished. James was celebrated for his unique collections of short stories, notably “A Pocketful of Noses” and “A Dirge for Clowntown,” which showcased his ability to weave complex characters and unexpected plots into compelling, bite-sized tales. Beyond his professional achievements, James was an avid birdwatcher, finding joy and inspiration in the natural world. His garden, a vibrant tapestry of flowers, was not only a testament to his green thumb but also a sanctuary where he observed and documented the avian visitors, often drawing parallels between the mysteries of nature and those in his stories.

I just learned of Mr. Powell’s passing today. I never met this extraordinary, gifted gentleman except through his superbly crafted stories in the pages of EQMM. From his tales of Ganelon to Sergeant Maynard Bullock to Santa Claus and his North Pole characters and beyond, the worlds he created brought me infinite joy. Last year I received an autographed copy from him of his “A Murder Coming” and it shall always remain a highly esteemed, cherished reminder of one of the world’s great authors. To his wife Mary Lou all I can say is that 40 years may seem like a lot to some folks, but it surely was much too little for you. God’s peace be with you.

Barbara and myself had the honor and joy to live next door to the Powells for a lot of years. We will miss you, dear friend. Our thoughts and prayers go to Marylou, her family and friends at this time of loss. Jim’s passing has left a hole in our hearts. I believe I will read a few of his stories, now, to share time with him again.
