Ira C. Book, 93

Ira C. “Bud” Book, 93, of Willow Street, died Thursday, June 14, 2018 while under the care of Hospice & Community Care. He was the husband of Grace E. (Reese) Book for over 71 years.

He was graduated from the former Strasburg High School in 1941.

Ira served in the US Army during WWII and was captured Christmas Eve of 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge. He was held as a prisoner of war until being liberated in April 1945.

He worked for the former Pennsylvania Railroad and retired from AMTRAK as a maintenance signalman.

He was a long-time member of West Willow United Methodist Church.

Ira was a member of the American Legion Post #603, Quarryville, the Manor V.F.W. Post #7294, Millersville, and Strasburg Lodge #361, I.O.O.F.

Born in Strasburg Township, he was the son of the late Walter F. and Miriam (Barley) Book. In addition to Grace, he is survived by a son, Ira Michael married to Deborah Diane (Eshleman) Book; a daughter Beth Book Groff married to Gary L. Groff of Willow Street; two grandchildren, Nichole Book States married to James States of Wellsboro and Ty Michael married to Emily (Robinson) Book of Lancaster; three great-grandchildren, Zoe Lynn States, Lucy Elizabeth Book and Simon Drew Book. He was preceded in death by a sister, Janet Book Rice.

The funeral service will be held on Monday, June 25, 2018 at 10:00 AM in the Bachman Funeral Home, 7 South Decatur Street, Strasburg, PA. Interment in Willow Street Mennonite Cemetery will follow. There is no visitation scheduled.
