Herbert J. Zankl, 82
Herbert J. Zankl, 82, of Lancaster, passed away on Sunday, December 9, 2012 at the Hospice Unit of the Lebanon VA Hospital.
Born in Milwaukee, WI, he moved to Lancaster at the age of 3 and grew up in Cabbage Hill. He was the son of the late Joseph and Frances (Goetz) Zankl, and the husband of Ruth (Kaczikowski) Zankl, with whom he celebrated 58 years of marriage.
Herb attended St. Joseph Catholic Grade School, and went on to attend and graduate from Thaddeus Stevens Trade School in Lancaster. A US Navy veteran, Herb served as an Electrician’s Mate Third Class in Korea during the Korean War. He worked for several employers including Lancaster Motor and Ignitions, RCA, and Lancaster Lincoln and Mercury. He ultimately worked and retired from Lancaster County, working as a clerk at the Office of the Prothonotary.
Herb was a member of St. Phillips the Apostle Church in Millersville. He was active in the church where he served as an usher and had coached girl’s basketball. He was a lifelong member of the Lancaster Liederkranz, German Singing Society and Cultural Club. Herb enjoyed sports, particularly Notre Dame and his Eagles. In his younger years he was an avid hunter and enjoyed hunting with his brother Joe, who preceded him in death.
His greatest joy was going with his wife Ruth and visiting and spending time with his children.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter Debra and her husband Patrick of San Antonio, TX; son Darrin and his wife Jody of Tampa, FL and his son Daniel and his wife Kil Sun of York; five grandchildren: Abby, Alicia, Andrew, Christopher, and Evin; and three great-grandchildren: Bella, Daniel, and Ryan.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am Friday, December 14, 2012 at St. Phillips the Apostle Church, 2111 Millersville Pike, Lancaster, PA 17603 with The Rev. Mark E. Weiss as Celebrant. The family will receive guests at a luncheon following the service at the church. Interment will be private.
