Henry G. Michel, 81

May 22, 2022

Henry G. Michel, age 81, passed away on Sunday, May 22 at Lancaster General Hospital after a brief illness. Patricia, his wife of 30 years, was by his side.

Henry was born October 25, 1941 in Baltimore, MD. He attended the University of Maryland, and served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam. Professionally, Henry was a front-line supervisor and plant manager in industry. He then founded Henry G. Michel Associates and for 21 years provided coaching, consulting services, and professional development programs for business leaders.

Henry was committed to a life of community service. He loved his volunteer work as a Company Advisor for Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week (PFEW), an intensive program that educates high school students about the American free enterprise system. For 23 years Henry spent time each summer at Lycoming College, guiding young people in business simulations and providing them with real world lessons in entrepreneurship and teamwork.

SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon also benefited from Henry’s business expertise. For ten years he served as a mentor, helping small business professionals start, develop, and grow their businesses. In 2018, Henry received SCORE’s Ed England Award for Exceptional Client Services.

Henry also volunteered with ASSETS, Junior Achievement, the Arthritis Foundation and the Hempfield Food Pantry. Professional affiliations included the American Society for Training and Development and Reading Area Training Organization.

In his spare time, Henry enjoyed the outdoors. Hunting, fishing, boating, biking, birding, target shooting and riding a motorcycle made him smile. He was also an avid reader.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon Chapter, 313 W. Liberty St., Lancaster, PA 17603 or the Foundation for Free Enterprise Education, 3076 West 12th St., Erie, PA 16505-3857. PFEW is a program of this Foundation.

Details regarding a Celebration of Henry’s Life will be announced at a later date.

We at SCORE all loved and respected Henry and of course, will be sorely missed by all.  I sent a note to the Chapter members about Henry’s passing and am forwarding on to you some of the comments his collegues in SCORE had to say about him.

It is with great sadness to share with you our beloved mentor, Henry Michael  has passed away.  As I reported at the Chapter Meeting last week, Henry was in the ICU with pneumonia and serious heart problems.
Henry had just completed his tenth anniversary with SCORE and was well known and respected by his fellow mentors as well as many, many clients with whom he has mentored and co-mentored.
The family is planning a service for Henry in June and we will provide more information to you as it becomes available.  At this service, Cathy Bonser has asked  us to show strong support  for all he has done for SCORE.

Henry was a very gentle person and I considered him a good friend as well as an associate. You all know some of the things Henry did for our Chapter, but there is one thing very few of you know about. Henry was an avid fan of our Roundtable meetings from the first day he joined Score.

Henry loved to learn and found roundtable meetings one way to learn  from many different groups and speakers. When he joined us, we had 6 different roundtables meeting anywhere from the basement of the coffee house in Elizabethtown to the library in Quarryville.  Henry attended every single meeting for years! He would usually arrive early to help us set up and stay late to help collect feedback sheets and such. Unused agendas and rating sheets that would normally be put into the trash found their way into Henry’s hands to be used by him later as note paper. At that time we had over 50 roundtable meetings each year and Henry never missed. I truly appreciated his presence and participation.

Thanks for sending the sad news. I have many fond memories of times with Henry, at chapter meetings, socials, FMRTs and comentoring. In the sometimes “lonely” job as chapter chair, he would regularly give feedback and encouragement, and would always state whether he would attend a meeting, or not. He was a real class act and will surely be missed by all. May he rest in peace.

Thanks for sending the information about Henry. So sorry.  He and Ijoined SCORE at the same time and I always enjoyed working with himand respected his thoughts and ideas. He will be missed as a great guyand a wonderful mentor.

Henry was a good man as echoed by others.

He was a very fine, gentle man and he made this part of our world a better place
I will certainly miss him.

Thank you for letting us know. We both really loved Henry & Ed did PFEW with him. I am truly sad & will reach out to Pat.

I was so sorry to hear about Henry’s passing. I was involved with SCORE in starting my business, and I went to many SCORE meetings with Henry, including the Small Business Roundtable and Contractor Roundtable. Henry was always so willing to help everyone, to pass on his knowledge and experience in order to help me and other people build the businesses we started. Henry will be greatly missed in the community, not only because of his business expertise, but because he was a wonderful person. My condolences to Henry’s wife and family.

A gentle gentleman but with a passion to make a difference! He welcomed me to SCORE and I learned a lot by co-mentoring with him. Knowledgeable, personable with huge empathy and a ready smile. Always someone who persisted in asking the right, and sometimes difficult, questions to help a client move forward. It was my pleasure to get to know him a little over the past few years. It is clear that he touched so many lives in a positive way. Sincere condolences to his wife and family.

Henry attended so many roundtable meetings with me that I came to count on seeing his smiling face everytime. His past experiences enabled him to contribute too our meetings in a very significant way. I was shocked and saddened by his sudden passing. I will miss my friend and associate. Prayers for you and your family, Ed England

Can I tell you that the news of Henry’s passing was one of the saddest moments of my life. Henry brought more than his considerable expertise to SCORE — he enlivened every group & meeting he was in. You always wanted to hear what he had to say. The smile in the picture here captures his qualities — warm, smart, direct, and a little bit impish. He’s the kind of guy who makes you want to get to heaven just a bit sooner to join him there. We were blessd for the time we had with him.

Henry had a passion for life and people that was infectious. Working with him several times at the PFEW camps, I saw him often interacting with high school students, making a difference in their lives and giving them the encouragement and guidance they needed, to experience a sense of accomplishment at the week’s end. To his family and friends, may you find comfort and peace in reflecting on all the memories you have of Henry and in knowing that this man lived his life to the fullest and made a difference in lives that will live on for years to come. God Bless and Keep You Always, Myles Miller
