I’ve known Gus for 40+ years. My wife worked for him around 1973 when we were dating. He was good friends with my Boss Tom Barnett (or Tommy as Gus called him) at Lancaster Tool & Die around 1975 and I repaired his boat trailer at the shop. He was one of the friendliest people I have ever met in my 60 years. He was always busy but always stopped to talk and play with the kids.

RIP Captain we will miss you

Jim Knier

We are sorrowed to hear of Gus’ passing. May God give you peace and support you during this time. We enjoyed eating at Capt Gus’ and, though we moved from the Lancaster area, his is still the best sub for us, hands down. We are grateful for Gus’ support and tremendous contribution to the community and that he touched so many people with his great food and wonderful hospitality.

To Phyllis, Nick, Andrea, Spencer, Koumbara Barbara, and the countless friends and relatives who knew, and loved, "Capt. Gus," I send these heartfelt thoughts on the loss of someone for whom I’ve only fond memories, though too few of them since leaving Lancaster more than a decade ago.  On reading the contributions of others to this site, I had several immediate reactions:  first there were tears, which flowed so freely as to fog my glasses; then came the realization that my life would have been richer had I known Capt. Gus better and the recognition that, if the measure of a man is — as the saying goes — how he is remembered, then Gus was truly a giant.  When next in Lancaster, I’ll be sure to bring my wife and young daughters by for cheesesteaks and memories.

To Capt. Gus I say, "In honor of the fullness of your life, I’ll have mine with ‘the works.’"

My love and prayers are with you.

To Phyllis & Nick & their families:

Our sincere condolences for your loss. Many fond memories we have visiting Captain Gus’s Steakhouse. My husband had his first cheesesteak before heading to Alaska in 1969 then his 2nd in 1977 when his family came back in pa and again in 1984 when he came back from Japan serving our country.  I remember visiting a few times with my dad when I was younger and I looked forward to seeing him every time I visit…especially the puzzle tricks and tootsie rolls. I enjoyed and cherish his great sense of humor and generosity that he shows to everyone that comes in to his restaurant. RIP Captain Gus! You are greatly missed!

We are very sorry about Gus.  We know how near and dear he was with his family and how much they will miss him.
Gus had a wonderful gift of making everyone feel special.  He was a very generous person that has touched many lives.  He will certainly be remembered and missed by many.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
Your Friends at West Lancaster Animal Hospital

I’ve known Gus for many, many years and have had so many good and funny conversations with him and thoroughly enjoyed each one. Sometimes phishing days in the service, playing sports at McCaskey, his days at the Bamboo and Wanda Jackson, his early years growing up and always stories of his family whom he loved dearly. I’ll always remember him getting the ring and chain trick and I delighted in watching the kids and adults faces as they would try to no avail then he would stand there and do it. Of course it was never complete without his humorous banter. Or his girlfriend story and his 3 carat ring. He’d open that velvet box and there was a ring setting with 3 carrots!! He really loved doing those. His generosity was so HUGE as bad as his health was he’d trek down to the Amish farms and bring back produce for his customers and people in the neighborhood , all free, I once said to it might be the only time some of the neighborhood people got fresh produce. My daughter Jen has known him since she was little , loved him and his cheesesteaks . When she moved to NYC she missed those sandwiches so much and Gus sent some of his sauce and rolls along on one of my visits for her, He was just that type of man. A good man. He always would praise Phyllis, Nicky,Barbara, Nina ,Andy, and the Phillips Family. Jen and I loved him and cherish our fond memories and wool never forget him. I can see him now in heaven saying " Let me show you something hold out your hands and then he pulls out the ring and chain !!!! Deepest sympathy Love Jen & Gail Smith

I wanted to give my condolences to Nick and the entire family for their loss. Captain Gus was a good man, he was indeed wealthy because he had a huge heart, loved people, and lived his life helping others. Thanks for sharing your stories, vegetables, and fish with my entire family.

He made the best cheesesteaks of all time. I have never found and that could compete with his signature sandwich. There will only ever be one CAPTAIN GUS. Nicky you have big shoes to fill. Keep up the tradition & like your Dad you too will be wealthy ( not monetary) but in friend & loyal customers.

Capt.Gus….For many years, Kibby Haddad and I would frequent your shop…Him mainly to play the Pinball games at the back of the shop….He would often amass gobs of points and games, as the other kids would look on longingly.. And then he would give the games away to the kids waiting..Often, I would sit and chat with Gus as Kibby continued to ‘Rack up" the points….Of course, I had a cheese steak as I waited….We watched as the kids "grew up" into the business and they are doing a great job….Hope the tradition continues!!! Will be stopping in soon!!

Malinda (Linda) Smith

My deepest condolences.  He will be missed by so many.  A very sweet man with a huge heart; treated everyone the same and always had a story to tell.  I enjoyed seeing his smiling face and watching him interact with the little ones.

I think I only saw Gus one or two times without an apron on but what I remember most about Gus was that warm look in his eyes.  I lived at the corner of Chestnut & Nevin Streets for about 5 years and got to know Gus a bit – as I picked up yet another cheeseburger sub.

I was also fortunate to see Gus a few times at the home of Phyllis & Brian.  He was a good man!! I am very sorry & saddened for your loss.

I AM SO SORRY FOR UR LOS HE IS IN A BETTER PLCE NOW YES WE ALL ARE IN MORNING OF HI LOSS I REMEMBER ALL THE GOOD TINES AND ALL THE LAUGHTER HE BROUGHT EVERYONE WE WILL MISS HIM GOD BLESS

DONNA D DUNCAN

Since my dad first introduced me to the Captain at the age of five, his subs were the standard by which all would forever be judged and the manifestation of a father-son bond. But it wasn’t just the sandwich. It was the fishing poles on the ceiling. It was the newspaper articles cut out and hanging on the walls – anytime anyone he knew was mentioned in print, it made it on the wall. It was the photos of his kids and grandkids fishing with him, and photos of himself in his early strongman days. It was the giant marlin that loomed over the grill, soaking up the the smell of fried onions and cigarette smoke hanging in the air. But more than anything, it was the man behind the counter. The Captain. Every year, the anniversary banner his grandkids made him would have a new number stuck on or scribbled over the old number, while the "Celebrating ___ Years in Business" would continue to collect the grease and grime of the thousands of steak sandwiches cooked beneath it. To walk into Captain Gus’s Steak Shop was to walk into Captain Gus’s life. And to walk into a capsule frozen in time — to remember what it was to be five, whether with your dad, or now with your own son.
Thank you, Captain Gus. You will be missed, but never forgotten.
Ryan Smith

Our deepest sympathies on the death of your father.  He certainly touched so many lives.  He has left quite a legacy.
You are all in our thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely,
Chuck and Julie Colson

I join with so many many many others who knew Gus in offering our deepest sympathy on his passing. Although it is little consolation at this sad time, it should be of some satisfaction to know that in his passing you can celebrate the end of a very long and productive life.

The measure of a life well-lived is not in how much money one has or what possessions he has accumulated, but rather through the lives he touched and the sorrow he leaves behind. If the outpouring of sympathy on his loss is any indication, and it most certainly is, you can proudly and confidently say that his indeed was a life well-lived.

May you find peace and comfort in knowing that his loss is felt by all who knew and loved him.

In Sympathy,

The Wright Family (Tanya,Mike,Mike Jr,Kayla and Mariah)

My Deepest sympathies go out to your entire family. May god be with you at this difficult time. Capn Gus was an amazing man. My family visited his steakshop many times growing up not far from there and he had the best steak sandwiches around. We loved coming into his shop and hearing his many fish stories and jokes. He always came around and greeted everyone at their tables. He had a heart of gold and will be missed terribly, but will live forever in our hearts with the memories of him. RIP Cap’n will will miss you.

I could not belive my ears when I was told on Monday the 9th of the passing of such a wonderful man.I’ve lived in the Lancaster area on and off for the last 26 years, and from the very first time I met Capt.Gus he was always kind.I used to go into the shop early in the morning sometimes when I worked day shift and I had an hour to mess around, and he would say "Get yourself a soda young lady.",I would graciously accept and sit and talk to him for awhile. He would talk about where different words came from(that originated from greek words),or greek philosophy. He would also talk about the family and how much he loved his family and what his family meant to him.I know that he is sitting with Nena, and Andy and catching up on things.Captain,I know your going out on that big fishing boat in the sky and you’ll have a whopper of a story to tell when we see you again. God Bless All of The Family…. Rebecca Albright

Capt. Gus was a special man and it’ clear by reading the list of condolences that he meant a lot of things to a lot of different people. To us, he was the kind elderly man who made us laugh over dinner, entertained our young son with magic tricks and jokes, and made us feel as if we had been transported back in time everytime we stepped foot into Capt’ Gus’s Restaurant. To a time where people were kind and where you didn’t worry about being hurt or killed while going to the movie theater with your family. We will truly miss him and we send our thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.

Nick. Phyllis. Barbara, and the entire Family,

My wife and I are deeply saddened by The Captain’s passing and wish to send our most heartfelt condolences to all of you.

Since moving to Texas almost 7 years ago there is little about Lancaster that we truly miss. Gus and the restaurant are at the top of that very short list.

He was a great man, a great friend, and his passing leaves a hole that can never be filled.

Fair winds and following seas, Captain.

Cliff & Pat Spencer
Del Rio, Texas

So long Captain, may you sail the eternal heavens in peace. Thank you for the BEST subs and cheese steaks, which we will continue to enjoy with you in are memories.
Bob Abel

Your father went to McCaskey with my father, Jere Sullivan.  He would recognize me when I would come into the shop as one of the Sullivan kids & go on to tell me great fishing stories with my Dad, & my uncles, Jack & Chief Sullivan. He said they cost him a fortune because they introduced him to the joys of fishing.

He was an absolute treat & will truly be missed by everyone!!

Evie Sullivan

Gus will be remembered for his unfailing generosity.  He did his best to make every customer feel special.  I’ve eaten his cheesesteaks for over 30 years. Condolences to all of his family, especially Nick and Phyllis.  I know he will be deeply missed and I surely will miss his smiling face and stories at the steak shop.  May God grant you all peace and comfort.

So sorry to hear about Captain Gus.He really was a special man.He was a kind and giving person. There were many times that he would give  watermellons and peppers and of course candy to the neighbors. But the thing I remember most is . Even though he had his own subs, he still bought one from my son when he was selling them for scouts. He loved children. He will be missed a great deal.
 Mary Runk

Dear Phyllis,
We were saddened to hear of your dad’s passing.  We wanted you to know that you are in our thoughts and that we love and respect you, SO MUCH.
I wished I was back in Lancaster County so I could attend your Dad’s service.  (Unfortunately, it is a five hour trip both ways.)
We SINCERELY miss seeing and "picking" on you, but will definitely look forward to seeing you the next time we ever get back to my "Hometown".
Peace be with you at this sad time.
Love and Respectfully in Christ,
Kurt & Lyn Paddock

I grew up coming into the steak shop, listening to his stories and watching his tricks. The atmosphere was always welcoming & warm. I found that it was important to introduce my children to the same. As he did with me and every other child that stepped into his place, he told them stories and showed them tricks… And like everyone else, they loved it too. It’s difficult to lose a loved one and when I lost my Dad, I found myself at the steak shop that very day because it was somewhere that had such significant meaning to my life.
My deepest sympathy to all of his family and friends. He touched so many lives and was definitely one of a kind. He will be forever missed.

With Love,

Susan & Rafael

I got to tell everyone I have been going to Gus’s steak shop for more then 30 years and there was times that my wife and I went there 2 or 3 times a day and that’s no lie. I have had some of my best times at the shop and I have always felt like family there from a kid to just two weeks ago.. I always stopped in and say high to Gus and get my food.. he was always cutting up fresh stuff and had a smile on his face. It was always good to see him.. I have spend a lot of time there. I grow up just down the street. And I seen a lot of people come and go but Gus was always there…I can say I will miss him very much.. But I will still go there for my steak but no one will never make a steak like Gus… God Bless you Captain Gus….. Mark & Ashley Finefrock.

And the Finefrock family..

Even though we are in California, the sorrow of Gus’s passing is strongly felt.

We always looked forward to seeing Gus at the steak shop when we visited my family in Lancaster. Not many people knew of Gus’s tenure at the Bamboo Bar like I did. At 16 and with my parents approval, I played the drums with a rock band and backed up Wanda Jackson several times at the bar, where I learned a lot about life in the entertainment business. Gus was fun loving, hard working, did not take anything negative from any one and fought for his ideals. We will truly miss him.

Love from your friends in California,

Nick and Nancy Angelos

May Your Memories Bring you Comfort

Dave Porter

Thanks for not only the many wonderful cheesesteaks, but making us all feel like family.  My mom and dad took me to your restaurant as a child, and I reacently started bringing my four-year-old.  He immediately fell in love with Capt. Gus, and asked to go to "the old man restaurant with the fish stuff."  I think he won him over with the endless Tootsie Rolls.

Thanks for giving me the memory, as well as my son.  Tell Kenny Dommel you met his grandchildren and great grandchild, as he never had the chance, and now you’re reunited.

May God be with you in your sadness from Gus’ departure.  Be comforted in knowing his was a life well-lived and that he now rests peacefully in his loving Father’s presence.

With prayers,
Paul Pasternak

Barbara and family, we were saddened to hear of the passing of Gus.  We are so glad to have known
him and shared stories of "teacher" Gennie and enjoyed his magic tricks.  We know he will be greatly missed, but know that he is now in heaven with Gen and Paul.  Our thoughts and love are with you and
your many memories will sustain you.

I’d like to say that "I am the biggest Captain Gus’s fan on the planet", but I’m sure many others would fight me on that one!  When I moved away from Lancaster many years ago, I could never find a Cheesesteak Shop that compared to Gus’.  Not just for the taste, but for the wonderful and inviting service that accompanied each meal.  I never liked to take my meal "to-go" because it never tasted quite the same.  Plus, I wouldn’t have Gus at home to come from around the counter to refill my drink and talk to.  He was such a wonderful man and a Lancaster Legend that will be truly missed by so many, but never-ever forgotten!  My deepest condolences to the Karpouzis family.

Hats off to you Captain Gus! Thank you for all you did for me. You were a positive influence on so many people, and had such a generous nature. We will all miss you – yours was a life well lived.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family. I first met Capt. Gus in 1991 when I brought my then 3 and 6 year old kids in to order a large cheesesteak to split. I was a little unsure at first because of some of the "looks" we got from patrons but Gus gave us a big smile and talked to the kids while we sat and ate. He and his brother always had a warm smile and a big hello there "young lady" everytime I went in. He will truly be missed by me and the community has lost a treasure. I do pray for the employees who worked for Capt. Gus as I thought they were rude and disrepectful to him every time I was in there.
RIP Gus you will be missed!!!

I have been going into Capt. Gus’s since I was a kid 40 years ago (the last time about a month ago for those famous cheesesteaks!) and never do I remember a time where Gus wasn’t without a smile and a nice word for everyone!  I was sad to hear of his passing today and send my prayers to the family.

To the Karpouzis family,

Please accept our sincere sympathy for you at the passing of our beloved "Captain". Our name won’t ring a bell, but we spent many enjoyable times visiting with him when we ate at the restaurant. He helped us entertain friends, children, and grandchildren. We will miss him.

I had the pleasure of eating at the Captain Gus Steak Shop for many years.  I now reside in North Carolina and have not had a great steak since I moved here.  He and Nick made the best steaks around.  His shop reflected his love of fishing and boxing and the walls were covered with pictures of his family at different stages of their lives.  His love of family was quite evident.  He treated everyone who came into his shop with respect and they, in turn, respected him.  I was very saddened to learn of his passing, but the legacy that he leaves behind will go on for generations.  My deepest condolences to his family and extended family. He now has his angel wings and he is watching over his family.  He will be greatly missed.

OUR PRAYERS AND THOUGHTS ARE WITH THE FAMILY OF "CAPT GUS". HE WAS A COMMUNITY ICON AND WILL BE TRULY MISSED

Your father was a great man. I can remember coming to his shop and ordering a steak sandwich and I would always say no pepper just salt and your dad would alway say back to me.No salt just pepper. I can also remember hot he use to eat hot peppers right from the big jar. He will truly be missed by me and my husband.

I am going to miss Gus very much. I remember the jokes he would give and how many times he made me feel like I am a good friend of his. He always knew who I was and would joke with me the many times I visited the shop. I loved the food there but most of all I loved the feeling of family there. Even if you weren’t related he made you feel you were. I always felt when he was around I was a little bit Greek. I expect to be at the services on Wednesday and say more there. Love and blessings, to all- Michael Brinley
