Gloria L. Schnee, 79

January 11, 2018

Gloria L. Schnee, 79, of Lancaster, passed away at Masonic Village, on Thursday, January 11, 2018. Born in Lancaster, Gloria was the daughter of the late Michael D. and Johanna R. (Huss) Henry. She was the loving and faithful wife of Philip R. Schnee, with whom she celebrated over 58 years of marriage.
Gloria was a 1956 graduate of McCaskey High School, where she proudly served as the Editor of the Yearbook and was a member of the cheerleading squad. She worked for over 45 years for WGAL, working her way up to Assistant Controller. Recently, Gloria was honored by being inducted into the WGAL 2017 Hall of Fame. Following her retirement from WGAL, she volunteered for the Lancaster City Police Department.
A faithful member of All Saints Anglican Church, Gloria sang in the church choir. She also enjoyed singing with the Lancaster Chorale. Gloria was a veracious writer, who entered a daily journal of her life in her diaries. She was also an avid reader. The most important part of Gloria’s life was her family; she especially loved her grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Gloria is survived by her three children: Sharon L Gromis, wife of Jeffery J., of Landisville; John P. Schnee, husband of Cynthia, of Manheim; and Karen L. Largent, wife of Todd, of York; five grandchildren: Caroline L. and Keith Gromis; and Sarah, Juliana, and Timothy Schnee (she was the biggest fan at dance recitals, musicals, concerts, football games & other activities); and two siblings: Dorothy Oblender, wife of Robert, of Millersville and Shirley Webb, of Lancaster. She was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Arthur C. Webb, III.

Aunt Gloria
I can remember walking with my mom and brother to your house as a child -we lived 2 blocks away from you. I can remember you calling me “Malk Yebb” just like Pap-pap (your father) did. I can remember birthday cards coming to my house for 58 years adorned with your perfect handwriting (like your sister) wishing me a happy birthday with was two days after mine. I missed that last year when you became ill and I will think of you everytime my birthday arrives because of you thoughtfulness of sending me a card every year. My son was born on your birthday. Again thoughts of you. My mom (and dad) loved you very much and spoke of you often to Patti and I – you will be missed….
See you again…Aunt Gloria
Your Nephew

My beloved Sister and Best Friend

How I will miss your comforting and wise presence. All of our lives there wasn’t a day or two that had gone by that we hadn’t spoken to each other about everything in general and nothing in particular on the phone. A constant “busy signal” if anyone tried to contact either one of us…didn’t matter as long as we had that special connection. When we were children, being your older sister, I was put in charge by momma to plan our daily “adventures” that little girls experience basically all of their lives. Always together without fail as the hours in our busy day simply flew by-but only until the next day when it all began again.
My sincerest deep love and condolences are extended to Phil, her constant and everlasting companion the love of her life for well over fifty-eight years and to her wonderful children and grandchildren that she adoredand nurtured thoughout her life.
Until we meet again dear Gloria.
Ever so proud to be your sister
Shirley (Henry) Webb

Aunt Gloria,
You were not only my Aunt and my Godmother, you and Uncle Phil were my parent’s best friends. I will always remember how, when I was a very small child, you would show me off to friends and family, with good humor and great pride, by having me identify the make and model of each car that passed by. I remember how, well into my adult life at family gatherings, you would recall how you would say, “Dougie, what kind of car is that?” and I would say, “Buick, or Ford, or ‘Chebby’,” and everyone would laugh, and my mother beamed with pride, as they remembered those innocent, carefree days when mam-mam and pap-pap were still alive and living on Fremont Street. We all lived within five blocks of each other on Cabbage Hill. I remember Uncle Phil teaching me to tie my shoes in a somewhat unusual manner. I still tie my shoes exactly the same way. I remember walking to your house with my mother, and my brother to see your new baby, Sharon. I think that Sharon was the first baby, and actually one of the few babies, that I ever held. I remember coming to your house on Union Street so that Uncle Phil, who has loved you dearly throughout your life, could help me with algebra. That must have been a frustrating experience for him, but you were both very patient with my frustration and lack of mathematical ability. Those are truly wonderful memories (except for my lack of mathematical ability…).  I have heard every detail of your travel experience with my parents. Mom related to me the details of each destination, as well as the highs and lows of each meal, and the idiosyncrasies of each tour guide. They thoroughly enjoyed every moment with their favorite travelling companions. I remember the times that I would call my parent’s home on the telephone, and hour after hour, day after day, week after week, month after month, and year after year, I would get continuous busy signals because mom was talking to Aunt Gloria (but not during “Days Of Our Lives!”). During the six years that I worked at WGAL-TV, I remember the respect, bordering on reverence, that the mere mention of your name would inspire. The last time I was in your home on Pioneer Road, I had just arrived in Lancaster after seeing the Indianapolis 500. It reminded me so much of the countless holidays, family reunions, and picnics that we had there over the years. You were the perfect hostess and the food was always so good! As I grew-up there was always a “Rainbow Bible” on the nightstand next to my bed. The inscription says, “Presented to Douglas Lee Webb by Aunt Gloria Henry, December 25, 1958.” When I became an adult and left the home of my parents, I lost track of that Bible. Mom rediscovered it and recently returned it to me. It has regained its place on my nightstand where it will remain for the rest of my life. Aunt Gloria, I will always remember you. We’ve all gotten older, and I hope a little wiser, but when I think of you I will remember the fine family that provided me with the roots and the foundation to carry on. I will always remember your laugh! Love, Doug

I love you, Grandma. I’m sorry I wasn’t there last Thursday. I had a doctor appointment. So I’ll see you this Friday instead. Is that okay? We’ll spend the whole weekend together. – Sarah Elizabeth
