George Murray Cooper, Jr., 86

George Murray Cooper, Jr, 86, of Denver, died Saturday, December 12, 2015 at Lancaster General Hospital.
Born in Kingstree, SC, on February 26, 1929, he was the husband of Katie M. (Levy) Cooper of Denver. He was the son of the late George Murray Cooper, Sr. and Rosa E. (York) Cooper.
George was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Lancaster. He graduated from East High School in Columbus, OH, and attended Harrisburg Community College where he earned his Associate’s Degree in Accounting. He continued his education in accounting and taxation up until recent months.
He was a proud veteran of the US Army for 28 years, traveling extensively while serving his country. He received many awards, including the National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal. He retired as a Sergeant Major.
Post retirement, he worked for 17 years as an accountant for the Commonwealth of PA, and later for Jackson Hewitt and H&R Block.
In addition to his wife, George is survived by a son, Derrick W. Thomas of Houston, TX; 2 daughters, Kassandra G. Guyton (Velton) of Indiana and Lucinda A. Smith of Ohio; a goddaughter, Etta Horton (Brian) of Macungie; a brother, Jim Cooper, and a sister, Mary Horton, both of Reynoldsburg, OH, and 3 grandchildren.
Home going Services will be held at 11 AM Saturday, December 19, 2015 at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 701 N. Lime St, Lancaster with the Revs Roland P. Forbes, Jr and Thaddeus L. Godwin, Sr. officiating. Family and friends will be received at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will be private.

Ms.Cooper Iam saddened to hear about the loss of your Husband but my Uncle Jerry’s passing. He was always with a BIG SMILE as I will always remeber him in that way;). He was a great Uncle to me and my family and lovingly cared for my Grand mother who was his sister in law to the late Ms Mary Jane (Anderson) Cooper. I wish we could have been there to grieve with you but we didn’t know until now. So I would like to extend my condolences to his children Ms Alva Thompson, and Ms. Elaine McPherson as well and his many grand children and great grandchildren
