Frank Homer Kendall, 80

July 13, 1940 - August 14, 2020

Frank Kendall, 80, died Friday August 14, 2020. At the time of his death, he was a resident of Willow Valley Communities in Lancaster, Pa. He was a native of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in Chemical Engineering; and was a member of the Alabama tennis team.

He began his work career for Exxon in Texas and worked for them and their affiliates for 38 years in Texas, New Jersey, New York and, for the last 15 years of his career, in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Behind the primary importance of his family came his love of teaching Bible classes in all five of the states in which he lived. His faith led him to become active in Civil Rights activities beginning in the 1960s including integrating housing in Baytown, Texas, involved in a school integration plan for the City of Houston, served on the Board of Directors of Houston’s Poverty Program and worked for quality education for all children wherever he lived. He served on the school board in Summit, N.J. He chaired several school bond elections in Greensboro, N.C.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Patsy (his junior high school sweetheart whom he married at age 18). He is also survived by his daughters, Cynthia Baker and her husband Terry of Summit, NJ., Kathryn Radutzky and her husband, Michael of Charleston, SC and his son Neal Kendall and wife, Marya of Los Angeles, CA. He has seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. His brother, Tommy and wife, Alice, live in Dallas, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to UCC Willow St., Pa, River Road Church, Richmond, Virginia or College Park Baptist Church in Greensboro, NC.

In the 1960’s, Frank was my supervisor in long range planning at the Baytown refinery for Humble Oil.  I had noticed Bret Baier on Fox News wearing an orange striped tie and recalled to my wife that the best supervisor I ever had gave me a similar tie when I complimented him on it.  Frank was that man and I still know he was the best.  I am glad others were blessed by him also.

Patsy and family.  Joan and I are saddened to hear of Frank’s passing. He was without a doubt at the very top of nice people at Gilbarco.  He had such class and was always honest in any dealings that you had with him. There is no doubt that his family was the most important part of his life. He also possed a tremendous sense of humor.  I had great respect for ability to help improve his coworkers.

Dear Patsy and Family,

I was so sorry to hear of Franks passing.  He helped me so much in my early career at Gilbarco.  I count him amongst a small number of wonderful without whose help I would not have achieved what I have.  Such a patient, insightful and great man in every way.

Oh Patsy, I am so sad but so proud to have known Frank these many years. You might find this odd but I have often, when discussing politics, our divided country, the religious right, held you and Frank up as “good Christians” –  the kind who live their truth, live their values, their Christian values, as taught by Jesus. I hope Frank’s was a “soft landing” and that you find comfort, along with the children, in the amazing memories you have, the many joys you shared and the blessing of having enjoyed an extraordinarily fulfilling marriage. Love you so much.
