Father Alexander Veronis, 90
June 26, 2023
The Reverend Father Alexander Veronis, 90, longtime pastor of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Lancaster, entered eternal life on June 26, 2023 exactly the way he had hoped – with his beloved wife of 64 years by his side.
Fr. Veronis’s legacy is primarily one of love, faith and service. He tried to see Jesus in every person, was a champion of the underdog, and a strong advocate for the oppressed and the forsaken. He lived by the belief that a rich man is not one who has much, but one who needs little and shares his blessings generously with others. He taught and encouraged his parishioners to use their talents, time and money to promote the faith and to help those in need. He was a father and mentor to all of the people he served and loved.
Fr. Veronis considered it a privilege to be able to share in the joys and sorrows of his beloved parishioners. He relished visiting their homes, sharing in their lives, baptizing and marrying their children, and burying their loved ones. He had a strong affinity for the youth and he and his wife, Pearl, helped to establish the vibrant Metropolis of Pittsburgh Camp Nazareth summer camp program that has impacted generations of Orthodox Christians.
He was noted for his leadership in Orthodox Christian missions and in ecumenical relations. For 43 years, he chaired the Lancaster CROP WALK FOR THE HUNGRY of Church World Service (CWS), helping to raise more than $5 million dollars to alleviate hunger and poverty in Lancaster and in 80 countries worldwide. His dream was that no person would go to sleep hungry anywhere.
Another lifelong passion of Fr. Veronis was missions and sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ throughout the world. He helped establish the Orthodox Christian Missions Center (OCMC), the premier Orthodox Christian mission agency in the USA, and was named as the president emeritus following his retirement.
He also helped to establish the Endowment Fund for Orthodox Missions (EFOM) which endowed the Missions Institute of Orthodox Christianity at the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. A highlight of his life was making a mission trip with his wife to Kenya to build a medical clinic in 1988, joining his son, Luke, who was serving there. He never stopped marveling about the joy he experienced worshiping alongside his African brothers and sisters.
Father Veronis was born in Paterson, N.J., the son of Nicholas and Angeliki Veronis, beloved Greek immigrant parents from Crete, Greece. He was the fifth of six children. He served Annunciation Church, his first and only parish, for 62 years as Pastor and Pastor Emeritus (1961-2023).
He graduated from Lafayette College (B.A.), Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology (B.D.) , Boston University School of Theology (S.T.M), and Athens University School of Theology. He received an honorary doctorate (D.D.) from Lebanon Valley College in 1992. In 2015 Boston University School of Theology recognized him as a “Distinguished Alumnus.”
Ordained to the priesthood in 1961, Father Veronis began his parish ministry at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Lancaster. Back in the 1960s, he was among the first in the Orthodox Church to establish regular Bible Studies. He was among the editorial committee to establish the first Orthodox Study Bible in 1993.
In 2008, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and his fellow priests honored his philanthropic and progressive ministry by bestowing on Fr. Veronis “The Distinguished Ministry Award” – the highest tribute given to any Greek Orthodox priest in the country.
Surviving, in addition to his beloved wife, Presbytera Pearl of 64 years, are their five children: Catherine, wife of David Garman (deceased); Nicholas, husband of Susan (Zervanos); George, husband of Christine (Reid); Rebecca (Veronis), wife of Matthew Michalopoulos; and Father Luke, husband of Presbytera Faith (Stathis). He had fourteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
To his final breath, Fr. Veronis gave gratitude for his wife, Pearl, his faithful companion and loyal partner in Christ. His love for her knew no bounds, and he often said that he could never have been the leader and the priest he was without her support. She was, in every sense of the word, his co-minister. Their love for each other showed their children and parishioners how joyful and fulfilling a Christ-centered marriage could be.
The family will receive visitors at the viewing on Thursday, June 29 from 3-8:00 pm, with the Trisagion Service at 6 pm, at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 64 Hershey Ave, Lancaster, PA 17603. A Divine Liturgy will be held Friday, June 30, at 9:30 am, followed by the funeral service at 11 am. Following the service will be the interment at Conestoga Memorial Park, 95 Second Lock Road, Lancaster.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Father Alexander Veronis’s memory to Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church’s renovation of the Church Social Hall, 64 Hershey Avenue, Lancaster, PA 17603 or to The Missions Institute of Orthodox Christianity at Hellenic College/Holy Cross School of Theology, 50 Goddard Avenue, Brookline, MA 02445.
The Funeral Service will be livestreamed at:

Beloved Father, co-celebrant and Friend , Fr Alexander and Presbyters Pearl gave me every reason to join the priesthood. After reading several of their letters about mission and the 1988 mission in Kenya, I gave up my soul to serve him. Moments with Fr Luke gave my weaknesses some strength It didn’t come as quickly as I thought. I participated with the team to Lira, Uganda and Bukoba, Tanzania but in the Nicodemus style “by night” so to say. Africa has befitted so much from you For Alexander and I stand here, celebrating divine Liturgy at St Sophia orthodox church Nakinyuguzi in Makindye Kampala Uganda, I see you and my brother Fr Luke smiling and holding my hand telling me to go out and make disciples of men. So pleased that God has taken you, Fr Alexander into His rest when we are celebrating the great mission and commission that you stood for and planted into us your children. Fr.Luke and Papadhia Faith, may the love of Fr Alexander mantled through you continue as incenses at the Announciation and spread to all corners of the world. The orthodox church in Africa needs now than ever before the Spirit of Fr Alexander and those he has mentored in mission as the church is undergoing persecution from fallacy of prosperity. We together mourn our beloved Father Alexander and condole with you Papadhia Maama Pearl and the family and entire Announciation parish. Your memory shall be eternal. Ekijjukizo lyo tekilikoma. Thank you, Your Eminence, Clergy and Friends for the solemn respect and send off shared with us online. Love. Freely given. Freely we give. Amen.

Dear Veronis Family,
Our deepest and heartfelt condolences.
Father had such a huge positive influence on me, from my baptism to my wedding to my fun interactions with him everytime I came to church throughout the years. He always greeted my own family with twinkling eyes and a kind heart. You just knew that he would brighten your day and offer up something good to lift your spirits-a prayer, a good wish, a grip on your wrist as you tried to sneak away with a piece of antidoron followed by a barrage of questions. He was the kind of legendary father figure that you think will always be there; the kind that you could turn to in time of need or just when you wanted to drop by and say “hi.” The last time I saw him, he prayed with me by his icons and wished my children health and hapiness. I will never forget this truly special gift!
Father will be truly missed. May his memory be eternal.
Love,
Evelyn K. Pentikis & Family

I am sincerely sorry for your loss. Father Veronis held the funeral for my boyfriend Adam almost 30 years ago. His teaching ability left an impression in my memory similar to Billy Graham. What a wonderful soul! I’m blessed to have encountered him in my time of mourning. Rest assured he’s with our savior.

I had the privilege and honor of working along side of Father Veronis in my capacity with Church World Service and the CROP Hunger Walk. His faith and compassion will stay with me forever. His ecumenical and spiritual leadership was inspirational and his grace touched more lives than we would ever be able to count. Through his leadership in the CROP Hunger Walk, countless were fed, clothed, educated and given the opportunity to thrive. I was blessed to have known him and I know that he will be sorely missed. But I believe that the good that he did and the love that he shared will live on in our world forever.

Dear Veronis Family, I was greatly saddened to learn of Father Alex’ death. Pearl and I worked together on many committees as our children grew up. We always admired your family and I enjoyed interaction with all your sons over the years. Many years ago with a lot of memories. You are in my prayers. lovingly, Garnet Keller and son Peter

Uncle Allen is a man who showed up. He showed up after the 6 hour drive from Lancaster to White Plains for every important family event and was so happy to give his time and his words of love to the family. I was especially grateful when he helped Father Stephanopolos officiate at my son John’s baptism. It felt like John was in the hands of many holy men and was a beautiful service I will never forget. Love to all who loved him. Georgia Kacandes

Father Veronis was our family’s priest, and community cornerstone for many Greek immigrant families in Pancaster, and a charismatic engaging well spoken family man. My mother Alice looked up to him and Presbytera Pearl, and his family / the church family as her adopted family here in the United States. Thank you for everything you have done, and may your memory be eternal.

Dear Presvytera Pearl, Fr. Luke, Presbytera Faith, and all of the Veronis Family,
A reverberation of heavenly bells is being felt by the entire world as we all honor and mourn the beloved life and legacy of your Dad, Fr. Alex.
I (Vangie) remember, once coming to your family’s home when I was a GOYAn, and seeing a myriad of framed family photos on the wall, arranged ‘just so’- each placed with such love. I knew at that moment that all that is arranged in Christ, with love and honor to Him, is blessed by His Hand, and your Dad’s incredible life certainly overflows with blessings that we hope you will feel unto eternity.
Fr. Alexander’s hands truly did the Lord’s work – and we pray his priestly soul continues to do so in the Heavenly Celestial Altar. Fr. Veronis’ priestly mission was through God’s Grace, and he illumined and welcomed all with fervor and zest for life in faith and Christian tradition. May God’s great blessings and comforts be with your family, especially for your Mom Pearl – who to this day is priceless and a treasure to all. May God strengthen you all for the journey ahead. Fr. Luke- may your priesthood be strengthened always by your Dad’s priestly example and his pastoral heart in Christ. With prayers of blessed comfort and strength to your immediate family, extended family relatives, and to The Annunciation Church Family, and to all who were blessed and touched by Fr. Alexander Veronis’ life and ministry.
In Christ,
Fr. Peter, Presbytera Vangie Orfanakos

Deepest and most heart felt condolences to the Veronis family on the passing of the finest priest I have ever met from the Lelekis family. On a personal note, I was an alter boy with Fr. Veronis back in the 1960’s and when he raised the chalice and beseeched God to turn the bread and the wine into the body and blood of Christ, a ray of sunshine would stream in through the windows and touch the cup. Both my parents, RIP, loved Fr. Veronis. I felt Fr. Veronis was one of the only genuine clergymen that I have ever known. His memory should remain eternal for as long as the Greek Orthodox Church exists in Lancaster. Goodbye and fare well Fr. Veronis.

Sincere condolences from the Combitsis family. My father, Rev. Fr. Constantine Combitsis, cocelebrated Divine Liturgy and Vespers many times with Fr. Alexander in his parish in Lancaster and in other parishes of the area. I remember Fr. Veronis’s smile and his support of missionary work in Uganda and Kenya. May our Lord give rest to his soul “where the righteous repose… in the bosom of Abraham…”. To Presvytera Pearl and his children, ΖΩΗ ΣΕ ΣΑΣ, may he have a Blessed Paradise, and may his memory be eternal. Apostolos (Paul) Combitsis

Dear Veronis family,
we were saddened to hear of father Veronis’ passing. When we immigrated to the US in 1999, father Veronis was amongst the first people to come to our home and welcome us. He baptized my sister and me, and was a great encouragement to us all in those early days. We will miss him and take comfort in knowing that he is with our Lord Jesus.

To the Veronis Family,
It is with sadness I learn today of the passing of this Great Man the Priest, the Leader Fr. Alex Veronis who empowered and impacted the lives of so many people throughout the world. They do not make men like this today with such caring and compassion like he had for the underprivedged. Aiwvia tou e mveme.
My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time as I know what it is like to lose not just my dad from a brain tumor and also another great priest the late James Diavatis who also impacted greatly the lives of his congregation. To Presbytera and the family you were blessed with long marriage, staying in one location and having Fr. Alex in your lives for as long as you did.

Dear Veronis Family,
With heavy hearts, the Stamus family from Easton grieves with the sad news of Father’s passing. Father and Presbytera were very close with our parents and were always with us on our family’s happiest and saddest hours.
I will never forget Father Veronis saying “Today is the Day the Lord has Made let us Rejoice and be Glad in it” at the beginning my brother Nikolas’ funeral. From that day on, I have always remembered that prayer, even in our saddest hour, we have so much to be thankful for.
May his Memory Be Eternal and God Bless you Presbytera Pearl and Family that will miss him so dearly. Beautiful Obituary. Filakia
