Emmanuel Philippos Papadakis, 83

Emmanuel Philippos Papadakis, 83, of Wyomissing, formerly of New Holland, passed away on Thursday, May 24th, 2018. He was born in New York City and was the son of the late Philippos E. Papadakis and Helen (Eastman) Papadakis.
Emmanuel is survived by the love of his life, Stella Papadakis, of Wyomissing. They were married in 1960.
He graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with a B.S. in 1956 and a Ph.D. in Physics in 1962 and earned a Master of Management from the University of Michigan in 1979. In his professional career, he served as Associate Director at the Center for Nondestructive Evaluation at Iowa State University, managed the Quality Control Research Department at Ford Motor Company, in Dearborn, and was on the technical staff at Bell Telephone Laboratories where he researched materials, measurement methods and nondestructive testing. He holds nine patents. He was a Fellow of ASNT (1984), and member of IEEE and the Acoustical Society of America. He was awarded the Biennial Award (renamed to R. Bruce Lindsay Award) in 1968 for theoretical and experimental understanding of the propagation, attenuation, diffraction, and refraction of elastic waves in crystalline and polycrystalline solids. In 1979 he received the Lester Mehl Honor Award. He authored numerous juried journal articles, was editor of technical books and had one of his science fiction short stories accepted for publication.
Emmanuel had a lifelong interest in Greek Orthodox theology, astrophysics, antiquing, fine furniture woodworking, identifying and collecting butterflies, gardening, handcrafting his own raspberry jams and spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Susan Helen Papadakis, wife of Damon J. A. Goldstein, Venice, CA, and three sons, Philip E., significant other of Lisa Griffen, West Hartford, CT, Christopher E., husband of Martha Bordic, West Lawn, PA, Nicholas E., husband of Jessica Fields, Brooklyn, NY, eight grandchildren, and a brother Myron P. Papadakis, Houston, TX.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, May 31st, 2018 at 10:30AM at The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church 64 Hershey Ave. Lancaster, PA 17603 with The Rev. Hector Firoglanis and Rev. Alexander Veronis officiating. A viewing will be held on Thursday one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Burial will be in Charles Evans Cemetery, Reading, PA.
