Elsie Terry Zug, 97
Elsie Terry Zug, 97, died peacefully early Sunday morning, March 26, 2006, at Brethren Village Retirement Community, Lititz Pike, Lancaster, PA. She was the wife of Samuel R. Zug who preceded her in death.
Born in Wilburton (Columbia County), PA, March 5, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Naomi Singleton Terry. She was a 1927 graduate of J.W. Cooper High School, Shenandoah PA and a 1931 graduate of Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh.
Mrs. Zug taught at Tamaqua High School, Tamaqua PA from 1931-1937, serving as that school district’s first home economics teacher. From 1937-1942 she was the Penn State Extension home economist for Lehigh County. Working out of Allentown, she developed many of the grange associations and 4-H clubs.
She was a very loved and respected home economics teacher in the Lancaster area, teaching at Lititz High School from 1947-1951, at Warwick Township High School from 1956-1965, and at Manheim Township High School from 1965 to her retirement in 1971.
She served as a Welcome Wagon hostess from 1951-1957.
A resident of Brethren Village since August 1985, Mrs. Zug was active in various volunteer activities and served on the resident council.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Terry, and a sister, Mary Terry. She is survived by nieces Ruth Miller and husband Kenneth, Coopersburg, and Nancy Terry of Ringtown; and a nephew Thomas Terry and wife, Linda, of Telford; two grandnieces and two grandnephews, three great grandnieces and two great grandnephews; cousins, and a dear friend, Giovinna Bradley, of Lancaster.
Funeral services will be on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at the Brethren Village chapel, 3001 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, PA, the Reverend Levi Ziegler officiating. Visiting hours begin at 10:30 a.m. Burial will take place at Conestoga Memorial Park, Lancaster.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions may be given to the Good Samaritan Fund at Brethren Village.
