Edward P. Blazer, 85
March 30, 2017
The Smart Man.
Edward Patrick Blazer of Lancaster/Lebanon, 85, died on Thursday March 30th, 2017. Ed, or “Pat” as he was known in his younger years and by family, was foremost, a teacher. He was the best husband, dad, teacher, and mentor ever!
Ed explored the heart and soul of humanity and profoundly touched the good in people with his presence and his stories. He is our love, our father, and our hero.
Ed graduated from Northeast Catholic High School in Philadelphia. After serving as a corpsman in the U.S. Navy, Ed attended Duke University where he met his wife Linda. He later earned his teaching degree at Millersville University.
Having played football at Northeast Catholic and Duke, he had a great capacity for teamwork, and a love of sports.
Ed’s long and dedicated teaching career began at Manheim Township High School where he was a member of the social studies department. He specialized in psychology, and in fact was a member of a select team of teachers that designed the Advanced Placement (AP) psychology curriculum for the entire country. He was responsible for bringing the AP psychology course to Manheim Township. As a strong believer in the importance of community service, Ed sponsored the Key Club. He also advised the yearbook staff and served as the school’s athletic trainer. He was heavily involved in The Pennsylvania State Education Association and served as the president of the Manheim Township Chapter. Following his retirement, he taught Psychology at Harrisburg Area Community College at the Lebanon Campus.
As a member of the Lancaster branch of Torch Club International, Ed won the International Paxton award for his paper on genocide.
Ed loved music and supported the arts. His participation in the Lebanon Senior Singers made him smile. Ed will be remembered for his generosity and his ability to meet the needs of others.
Surviving Ed are his wife Linda, daughter Grace Blazer, daughter/son in-law Heather and Joe Leaman, son/daughter in-law Benjamin Blazer & Kristine Yang, and his grandson Nathan Edward Blazer. Sisters Gloria and Barbara and their families also survive him. A sister, Lily, and a brother, Norman, preceded Ed in death.
At Ed’s request, a memorial concert will be held on Friday, May 12, at 7:00 PM at The Friends Meeting House, 110 Tulane Terrace, Lancaster, PA. 17603. If desired, memorials can be sent to The Harmonia Music Association, 414 E. Chestnut Street, Lebanon, PA 17042, or The Lancaster Torch Club, 1308 Willow Creek Drive, Mount Joy, PA 17552.

My family was discussing teachers that made a difference in our lives tonight. Mr. Blazer made social studies circa 1988 the most interesting and influential class at Manheim Township. The GREATEST story teller and an amazing person that touched ever one of his student in my class. We would literally beg him to tell us a story and of course he would always oblige. I realize this is many years after his passing and did not know until today but Mr Blazer will never be forgotten!

While I only got to know Ed for a brief time over this past year, he made an indelible impression in my life. His laugh was infectious and his stories were colorful and hilarious. I will miss him dearly.
Even while Ed was in the twilight of his life – he saw potential in people and cared in the future of others. Recently, he made some calls and pulled some strings to get a couple of his younger caretakers enrolled in local classes so that by furthering their education, they could have better lives in the future.
Ed knew and remembered everybody’s name – that quality in a human being does not get the credit that it deserves, it’s literally one of the most important things that you can do for a person, and Ed had it in spades.
I will never forget him frequently saying “let’s check it out on your calculator” referring to my smart phone 🙂 and specifically YouTube so we could watch videos about whatever movie, song or performance he was talking about at the time. We would have good times late into the night.
He loved his family and his wide circle of friends, he will be dearly missed and always remembered.
And I’ve got an important promise to Ed that I will keep. So take care for now big guy, we’ll see you on the other side down the road.

Mr. Blazer was an incredible human and a great teacher. I was a member of the Key Club at MTHS, but I really got to know him when I took AP Psychology my senior year. He always had a soft spot for us “music kids” and often talked about his son majoring in music at Temple. I still 20 years later remember specific lessons in his class- when he brought in students from Manos house to talk about addiction, or the “discussion” he and I had about the purposes of makeup. He was an amazing teacher who really cared about his students and about his subject. I was able to get college credit at Millersville and take upper level psychology courses easily due to his guidance. I am so sorry for your loss. I don’t know if I can make it to the music service, but it sounds wonderful. If I can, I’d even be willing to play something in his honor.

To the Blazer family:
My sincerest condolences to you on the passing of Mr. Blazer. I have known him since I was a child through my dad and I had him for 11th grade Social Studies at MTHS in 1995. He was a great educator and mentor and so very knowledgeable about world affairs. The education world has lost one of its best and brightest for sure. Thank you for sharing him with us. Prayers for your comfort and healing.
Blessings,

Mr. Blazer was my political science teacher and yearbook advisor at Manheim Township when I attended in 1967-68. I remember driving in a big truck with him to pick up the yearbooks and a bee got in the cab and I made him pull over and get rid of the bee before we could continue. He was a wonderful teacher and generous human being. I laughed when I saw the tag “smart man” – he certainly was. I thought he should be teaching college, not high school. So sad to hear he has passed.

I met Mr Blazer in July 2017.As one of the organizers of back packs for the children of employees at Conestoga View i was so grateful to Mr Blazer for his unprecedented and generous donation to our back pack campaign for children in need. I went to visit him and thank him;he declined to be acknoledged publicly for his donation . We only talked briefly but it was evident he was a born/genuine educator. We talked about our children and he was truly happy/delighted to know we had put our sons through college…wanted to know where they went and what jobs they had! Although we just met He genuinely cared about the importance of education for EVERYONE. I felt privileged for our brief encounter. My sincere sympathies for your great loss. Bridgette Mohimani

Dear Linda,my sincere condolences on the death of Ed.He was truly a good & generous man.
The last I saw you both at Hartz Therapy. I’m currently in Florida & will return to Lancaster in June or I would see you at the Fiends Meeting in May.
I’ve been a Quaker my whole life & didn’t realize the man who live across the street from me all those years was also of the Quaker faith.
God bless you & give you the strength to carry on.
