Dr. Randy A. Cohen, 65
April 25, 2023
We are deeply saddened to announce that, following a courageous five-year battle with pancreatic cancer, Dr. Randy Allan Cohen passed away on April 25, 2023. He was at home and surrounded by those who loved him most. He was 65 years old.
Born in Detroit, Michigan on July 9, 1957 to Irving and Arlene Ruth Cohen, Randy spent his childhood developing a lifelong passion for baseball. Working every weekend at his father’s produce stand at Detroit’s Eastern Market resulted in an unbeatable work ethic and unparalleled gift for selecting the ripest fruit. He attended Henry Ford High School (class of ‘75) and Wayne State University (class of ‘80) before graduating from Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1985. In medical school, Randy fell in love with his classmate Alice Hazell, and they married two days before graduation in Kansas City, MO on May 17, 1985. They joyfully welcomed daughter Leah into the world in 1988 and son Benjamin in 1990. After moving to the Lancaster area, Randy served as Director of Rehabilitation at Lancaster Community Hospital from 1992-1995. He helped numerous patients through his own practice, Pain Management and Rehabilitation Specialists, from 1989 – 2022.
Randy’s perfect day would include eating Coney Island dogs at a Detroit Tiger’s game then enjoying the sunset with a cigar in one hand and bowl of ice cream in the other. He loved movies, music trivia, and in the past year he rekindled an interest in drumming. He was always up for a long drive-in spite of his incredible knack for getting lost. What really set Randy apart, though, was the generous care he took of his family, friends, and patients. He listened with compassion and made a person feel seen, qualities that will be sorely missed by those who knew him.
Randy was predeceased by his parents Irv and Arlene. He is survived by his wife Alice Cohen; daughter Leah Collins (Dan Collins); son Benjamin Cohen (Holly Cohen); sisters Ronna Sabbota and Pamela Siegel; brother Howard Cohen (Susan Cohen); and faithful dog Cali. He was blessed to know many wonderful people, and in particular the family would like to thank Bob and Phyllis Doyle for their years of friendship and tireless support. We also thank his work family: Renee Burkey, Jacy Arrison, and Cheryl Ebright who loved him and will miss him dearly.
A Memorial Service will be held at Shaarai Shomayim (75 E James St, Lancaster, PA 17602) on Friday, May 5 at 11:00am, with the family receiving mourners at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations in Randy’s name to the Anti-Defamation League.
If you are unable to join the Memorial services in-person, a live stream will available via Zoom by clicking this link.

Dr. Randy Cohen was an incredible human. The world is a lesser place without him. He saved my life. I will forever miss the kindness, love, empathy, generosity, the banter, & marrow deep connection we had over the decade we had known eachother. I will forever be grateful of his compassion and heart; his character. Through those veins he will live on as an exemplary human & absolutely awesome person.

Randy as I knew him was my childhood friend. We attended Mettetal Jr High together and later Henry Ford High School. When I decided to get my PhD, Randy and I discussed the direction and purpose of my decision. He was kind, concerned and affable. I took for granted my old friend of 50 plus years would always be here. While the memory of him will live on, I am saddened by his earthly departure. Rest in paradise my old friend.

I am saddened beyond words. Dear, dear Dr. Randy with whom my husband and I most recently shared a lovely conversation at the practice’s vendor event. It is now 3 pm. 5/5, and I JUST read the obituary announcement and invitation to Temple Shaarai Shomayim (my synagogue, as well). I’m heart wrenched that we missed Randy’s memorial service, as we surely would have attended. Dr. Alice, please know that my heart cries with yours; albeit I know how bravely and beautifully you will outwardly face this journey in life. – Emotions will run deeply askewed at times, as losing a spouse is always painful. As a patient and friend of many years who also lost my late spouse to the ravages of pancreatic cancer, I am here for you, and I will hold you in my fervent prayers. I love you. Stephanie

Oh, Alice! How many times did we talk about our beloved state of Michigan. To see the Detroit Tigers mentioned in Randy’s obit seems so fitting to someone like me who came to understand what a wonderful experience it was to attend a game. I only met Randy once on a conservancy trail as the two of you embarked on a hike to see the wildflowers on a glorius spring day.
This is all to say that from all our conversations and encounters, my sense is that you and Randy and your family lived life fully and with gratitude. Hold on to that precious gift as you work your way through this time of profound loss. My sense is that he was a kind and loving and extraordinary man.
All my love,
Timi Kirchner

So saddened to hear of Dr. Cohen’s passing. I was his patient for over 20 years. He was always there for me. We had many discussions over the state of healthcare and the world. We talked about our children, our dogs, our travels. He enjoyed a debate regardless of how busy he was. So lovely having a physician that was able to spend time connecting with me beyond my condition. I will miss my friend and my doctor as will so many. Condolences to his family. They are in my thoughts.

So sorry to hear of Randy’s passing. We connected with our DNA realizing we were 2nd. cousins. His grandmother Dora and my grandfather Oscar were brother and sister. My grandparents also had a stand in the Eastern Market. Irv (Randy’s father) was 1st. cousin to my mother, Anna. Randy and I were both raised in Detroit. Our last email was not so long ago as he was being evaluated at Hopkins. I had no idea he was gravely ill. Sorry we never met. My belated condolences to the family. Rest in Peace.
