IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John F.
Schreder-Dentist
July 3, 2019
Dr. John F. Schreder, retired dentist, passed away on July 3rd 2019 with his loving family by his side. He was born on October 30, 1926 in his family home on Cabbage Hill, Lancaster. His parents were the late John B. and Rosina (Krallinger) Schreder. John was the devoted husband of Catherine (Emig) Schreder. They would have celebrated their 65th anniversary on July 10th.
Saint Joseph Parish was essential in John's early life. It was there that he attended grade school, played sports, served as an altar boy and for many years was active in the church. Formerly a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, he was most recently a member of St. Leo the Great Church.
John graduated from Lancaster Catholic High School in 1944. Upon graduation, John joined the Navy and served for two years during World War ll. After being honorably discharged, he attended St. Francis University, Loretta PA, followed by Georgetown University School of Dentistry; graduating in 1952. Returning to Lancaster, John established his dental practice at 320 West King Street. "Dr. John," as he was fondly referred to by his patients, thoroughly enjoyed interacting with his patients; often beginning their appointment with a joke. In 1954, Dr. John was joined on King Street by his brother, and best friend, Dr. Albert J. Schreder. The two brothers practiced together in the same office for 39 years.
In 1994 the practice was relocated to 151 Good Drive, Lancaster, where he was joined by his son and daughter-in-law, Drs. Michael and Jane Aldrich Schreder. Dr. John retired in 1997 after 45 years in practice. He was a member of the Lancaster County Dental Society, the Pennsylvania Dental Association, the American Dental Association, the Dean Cogan Dental Society, and the Delta Sigma Delta Fraternity. For many years Dr. John provided dental services to the Dominican Sisters of the Perpetual Rosary.
Golf was John's great passion as he was a member of the Lancaster Country Club for 38 years. He could be found on the golf course whenever his busy schedule permitted. Beyond becoming very accomplished at the game, he was also known for the pace at which he played. John and Al would play a round of golf so swiftly that their group was dubbed "The Schreder Express" by caddies and fellow golfers alike at LCC.
John was an avid fan of Notre Dame and the Green Bay Packers. He enjoyed many trips to South Bend to watch the Irish and was sent on a trip to a Packers game for his 75th birthday by his children. As loyal alumni and fans of Lancaster Catholic High School, John and Catherine were fixtures at academic and athletic events in support of their alma mater for decades.
Family was John's great love. He was so very proud of them all and loved them all very much. Whenever his grandchildren were involved in sports or other activities, he could be found cheering them on. The family spent many vacations together in Florida and Ocean City, NJ.
John is survived by his wife, Catherine, his four children, Donna, wife of Mark Matuzak, Kenneth, husband of Kristina Bloomberg, Dr. Maribeth, wife of Edward LeBreton, and Dr. Michael, husband of Dr. Jane Aldrich; nine grandchildren, Megan and Ryan Matuzak, Annaliese and Helena Schreder, Amanda and Emily LeBreton, and Andrew, Matthew, and Christopher Schreder. John was predeceased by his parents and brother.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Homestead Village Radcliffe Skilled Care Unit as well as Hospice & Community Care for the compassionate treatment John received under their care.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place 11 AM Monday, July 8, 2019 at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 2427 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, PA 17601, with The Rev. Peter I Hahn as Celebrant.
