Dorothy “Dottie” Liounis-Matheson (Fox), 94

July 16, 2025

Dorothy “Dottie” Liounis-Matheson (Fox), born on August 14, 1930, in Chester, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2025, in Quarryville, Pennsylvania. She was 94 years old.

Dorothy’s life was a vibrant tapestry of love, family, faith, and joy. From a young age, she embraced life with enthusiasm and grace. At just 18 years old, she married the love of her life, Jim Liounis Sr., and together they built a beautiful family over their 34 years of marriage until Jim’s passing in 1983. Their union brought five children into the world: Jim Liounis (Peg Moore) of Willow Street, PA; Lynn Liounis Tenney of Rising Sun, MD; Donna Liounis Kestel of Milton, DE; Steve Liounis (Kathie McKinley) of New Castle, DE; and David Liounis (Telesa Willis) of East Norriton, PA.

Dorothy’s legacy continued to grow through her 13 grandchildren—Jenn Liounis-Stringham (Jason), Mandy Liounis-Dombach (Brian), Meg Liounis-Heller (George), Lisa Tenney-Davison (Adam), Devin Greco (Sue), Steven Kestel Jr. (Laura), Lauren Kestel, Nicole Liounis-Serrano (Alberto), Steven Liounis Jr. (Jennifer), Aaron Liounis (Samantha), Andrew Liounis (Natalie), Christopher Liounis, and Alyssa Liounis-Woods (Drew)—and further still through her 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. Each generation carries forward her spirit of fun, warmth, and connection.

After Jim’s passing, Dorothy found love again with Neil Matheson Sr., originally from Norwood, PA. Introduced by friends who knew she deserved companionship as joyful as she was, Neil was immediately drawn to Dorothy’s beauty, her flair for fashion, and her zest for life. They married and shared 27 wonderful years together until Neil’s passing in 2018. Their time together was filled with playing cards or games with family and friends and going dancing on Saturday nights. They were wonderful dancers. They would float across the dance floor with elegance and grace. They shared so much love and laughter in their Florida home in what their family fondly called their “Camelot.”

Her deep faith in Jesus Christ was a cornerstone of her life. It gave her strength through loss and joy in everyday blessings. Dorothy found peace knowing that when her time came, she would be welcomed into the kingdom of God by her Savior and those who had gone before her.

Dorothy is also survived by her beloved sister Shirley Sellers (Fox), originally from Boothwyn, PA. The two sisters shared a close bond throughout their lives and spent their later years together at the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community in Quarryville, PA. Dorothy and Shirley share a brother, Benjamin Charles Fox, also known as “Binks” or “Charlie,” who passed in 2004.

There will be a Celebration of Life for Dorothy on August 14th at the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, 625 Robert Fulton Hwy, Quarryville, PA 17566. August 14th would have been Dorothy’s 95th birthday. The Welcoming begins at 10:00 and the Service and Sharing begins at 11:00 am. All are welcome to come and share your memories of Dorothy. Luncheon will be immediately following the Service. The family thanks everyone who showed kindness and love to our mother.

In Loving Memory of Dorothy Liounis-Matheson
“Mom Mom”Passed on July 16, 2025
It’s hard to put into words what it means to say goodbye to someone who never truly left your side. Dorothy Liounis-Matheson — my Mom Mom — was more than a grandmother. She was a second mother, a source of constant love, guidance, and strength throughout my life.
She was funny, sweet, and wonderfully innocent in her faith and kindness. She had a light spirit, a deep soul, and a laugh that warmed every room. She loved to dance, play cards, and could make even the quietest moment feel like home.
Whenever she got angry with me — which wasn’t often — she’d call me “David,” her youngest son. That’s how I figured out David wasn’t perfect… and neither was I. But Mom Mom never demanded perfection. She showed us how to live with humility, respect, and decency. She believed in working hard, giving to others, and putting God and family above all else.
I used to call her my “Duke Mom Mom” after she took in my mother’s dog, Duke. That name always made her smile — and it reminded me of how she made a home for everyone, including a dog who needed love.
She was one of the most devout Christians I’ve ever known. Her faith wasn’t just something she talked about; it was how she lived — through forgiveness, compassion, and an unwavering presence for those around her. If someone needed help, she was there. If someone needed grace, she gave it. She lived her life in service to others, and in doing so, she brought heaven just a little closer to earth for the rest of us.
We will miss her dearly — her warmth, her wit, her faith, and her love. But we carry all of it with us now, in how we treat others, how we lean into our own faith, and how we love our families.

Rest peacefully, Mom Mom. You were one of a kind — and you will always be with us. Devin Greco
