IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Diane Joyce
Gumble
March 19, 2014
Diane Joyce Gumble, 82, passed away on March 19, 2014. Her husband of 64 years, Bert was, as always, at her side. Born in Davenport, IA, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Georgia (Tollinger) Winter.
In addition to her husband, Bert, Diane is survived by three children: Karen Kalins, wife of Jeffrey, of Fayetteville, GA, Georgia Meier of Lititz, PA and Devan Grove, wife of John, of Millersville, PA; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Diane was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Robert Winter.
She was, above all, an utterly faithful wife, mother, grandmother, and a loyal and loving friend. If you were part of her family, blood relation or not, you could always count on her to be there for you in good times, and even more, in bad times. Her determination to support her loved ones through thick and thin was complete and unshakable.
Diane possessed a sharp wit, and could always be relied upon to tell the exact truth. In this, as in so many things, she could be entirely trusted. She was direct and no nonsense, but could also laugh so infectiously that all around her could not help but laugh with her. She could absolutely whoop with delight, a sound that will be so sorely missed.
Diane did what was important. She loved to travel, and took her family with her, always ready to share her passions with them. She instilled a keen sense of adventure in all her children, Karen, Georgia and Devan. She loved old things because when she held them she could feel the past, and connect with those from long ago. She appreciated beauty, and saw it not only in the usual places but where others often did not, in, for instance, a hundred year old pitcher that others would pass over without thought. Diane knew better, and she taught all around her to know too.
She loved the past but was never sentimental or maudlin. She looked forward to everything, from a good meal to the next good book, to watching a great-grandson grow and change, always ready for the next thing. She never stopped looking forward to the next good thing.
It is impossible to say how much she will be missed.
Family and friends will be received from 6-8 PM on Friday, March 21, 2014 at the Charles F. Snyder, Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543. Interment will be at 11 AM on Saturday, March 22 at Riverview Cemetery, Northumberland, PA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Make-A-Wish Foundation, 1054 New Holland Avenue, Lancaster, PA 17601 or to Wounded Warriors Project, https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org.
