David T. Brown, 65

March 18, 2021

David T. Brown, 65, of Lancaster, passed away Thursday, March 18, 2021, after a courageous battle with COVID-19 at LGH, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Lancaster, PA, he was the son of the late Harry D. Brown Jr. and Elizabeth F. (Dorwart) Brown. He was the loving husband of Debra (Hilt) Brown with whom he shared over 44 years of marriage.

After retiring from Lancaster City, Dave served as an instructor of Law Enforcement and Forensics at Dauphin County Technical School for 18 years. Throughout both of Dave’s careers, he was well loved by the kids and made a huge impact on their lives.

He was the most selfless, caring, and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother who was the rock that held the family together. He enjoyed playing golf, spending time at the beach with his family, watching his grandchildren at their sporting events, and treasured the simple times with family and friends. He was such a funny, good guy, providing daily laughter for his wife…..funniest guy she knew!

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Jason D. Brown, husband of Gretchen of Lancaster, two daughters, Melanie B. Drennen of Millersville, Lindsey A. Salsbury, wife of Lee of Lancaster; 6 grandchildren, Dylan, Natalie, Molly, Morgan, Nathan and Will; three sisters, Barbara Bishop, wife of Gary of Lancaster, Janice Sangrey, wife of Barry of Lititz, Diane Little, wife of Michael of AR and loving brother-in-law, Bob Hilt of Ephrata and a host of loving nieces and nephews.

Just heard and I am shocked.  A kind, gentle man taken by the virus.  I remember those “doe” eyes and the great smiles he and Deb always  wore on their faces. So sorry this happened.

To Deb, Jason and all the family, we are so sorry for your great loss.  Our memories of the “soccer family” and days enjoying all the fun watching the “musketeers”, both on the field and off, makes us smile.  Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers as you go through this difficult time.  May God’s peace comfort you always.

Dear Dave,
I always smile when I think of us playing together when we were children and neighbors on Chestnut St.

Officer David Brown,
A Good Man!  I remember being a Newlywed & on my way to pick-up my, then, Wife from work (30+ years, ago).  Stopped at the corner of W. Chestnut & N. Prince, I went through the Red Light — after looking at the Light on W. Chestnut & N. Queen, change from Red to Green.  I pulled over immediately & Officer Brown was behind me.  I explained what I had just done & where I was going — the Man that he was, said something like, “I’ve done that, myself”, “Just be careful”.  With the sentiment againt Police Officers, today — Officer David Brown is A True Testament to Honorable Duty!  Thanks, Officer Brown.  Peace Be Unto You!
Robert Jones
(P.S. — I, also, think I remember Officer Brown from the Boys’ Club of Lancaster & Camp Snyder)

Even though we kind of lost touch after working together at Armstrong, we were always really happy to run into you and Dave wherever that was. You two were team – always together. And you were fun! Dave was a great guy and such a good sport. When we learned of his condition and eventual passing, we were horrified. I’m so sorry Deb … I can’t even imagine what you and your family must be feeling right now. As you all work your way through your grief, please know that we are here for you. Sending you all our love right now and I pray that God gives you peace. We will be attending his service through the link provided on his page. Please accept our most sincere condolences.

Words just never seem enough in these times. Dave has been and will always be a very bright spot in a dark world and we have been so blessed to know him. I will forever hear his voice and the laughter that surrounds him, especially Deb’s awesome laughter with him. The Dave shuffle from this recent anniversary will be a reminder of how much he loves his family and his family loves him. Everyone who knew him couldn’t help but smile in his presence. The hugs at the kids sporting events are some of the very best!!! Our thoughts, our prayers, and our love continue. What a blessing to know that Dave was loved by and cared for in so many ways by so many people!!! Blessings to each of you❤️

Deb and family,
What a tremendous loss for you. My sincerest thoughts and prayers to you. I am blessed to have had the pleasure to work with him at LCPD.  When we both retired, we still saw each other at least twice a year when he brought his CJ classes over to HACC. He was a nut! Always made me laugh.  I would pass him numerous times on 283 either going to work or coming home. He drove like a tortoise and looked like he was sleeping and on autopilot. I would have to email him to let him know I passed him. I think of the hundreds of times I pulled up beside him and I think he saw me twice! I will always remember that smile and wave. You had a very special husband, father and grandfather. God Bless you all.  Cindy Shirk

I was so sorry to hear about Dave’s passing and will continue to pray for you all as I have since I first received word of his illness. I know I haven’t seen you for awhile but as so many others have said I will always remember your smiles and laughter and the pride you share in your family. People are missed but characters live on forever and Dave was quite a character. May you all find comfort in each other and cherish the memories of one great guy.

Brown Family,
I cannot thank you enough for sharing Mr. Brown with us. I entered the Law Enforcement program at DCTS as a “timid and insecure Freshman”, as he put it, and grew into who I am today with Mr. Brown’s guidance, compassion & love. He was my mentor. I would not have made it through high school without him. DCTS was the best decision I’ve ever made, because of him and his program. My heart is broken. The final line of my senior year yearbook message was: “Your losses, although sad, will eventually become your strength”. Take his last teaching moment with me as that strength. He always knew exactly what to say. Thank you for everything, Mr. B… I love you.

Deb & Family, We are so sorry to hear of the passing of Dave. We have so many great memories of Dave leading the charge of the Manor Ridge Bears. We had so much fun in tournaments with the girls. He was always making everyone laugh no matter what the situation. We could tell that he would make a great grandfather. His love for you was apparent with all the poking fun at you at practices. You laughed all the time. The girls looked at him as a father figure. Over the years I have to believe that he deeply affected alot of young people that he got a chance to talk to. His heart was always the biggest part of him. We hope God gives you and your family strength at this time of need. He was definitely taken too soon.

Debbie and family,  I’m so sorry for the passing of Dave.  Know you’re all in my thoughts and prayers.  It was wonderful seeing you again with Elliott, and only wish we would’ve had more time.  So many people that you didn’t know were praying for his recovery.  I guess heaven needed him more.  I’m so sad for all of you.  Take care.

March 24, 2021

Debbie & Family,
Cindy and I have fond memories of Dave and will miss his great loving heart made evident by a smile punctuated with hearty laughter wrapped around a sense of humor that could keep you in stitches nonstop.  When he was in a room with my dad, “Uncle Henny,” it was laughter ping pong.  Look out in heaven.  Hey God!  Have You heard the one about …
As a young patrolman, Dave was assigned to handle traffic at the busy intersection of Queen and Orange streets in downtown Lancaster.  I worked one block away in what was the Armstrong World Industries building on Queen and Chestnut streets.  Cindy and I with our family lived in the 400 block of East Orange Street at that time.  So I would walk home for lunch and back to Armstrong during the lunch hour.  Now, I am older than my cousin Dave, however, back then it wasn’t that apparent.  Dave, when the light changed, would come over and grab my arm as if I was 80 years old at the time and slowly escort me across the street.  As soon as Dave let go of my arm, I would walk away at a normal pace.  People would stare and look confused.  We would just wink at each other.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family, Debbie.  Remember, now Dave will walk Jesus.
Jesus loves you and so do we, Cindy and Don Dorwart

Dear Deb, Mel, Jason and Linny,
This is the hardest thing I have ever had to write. We are so deeply saddened by the loss of Dave. We have so many happy memories, (Manor Ridge coaching. the board, concessions and getting together to support the teams, Christmas Eves, baseball games, Halloween parties and much more.) We love your family and are here if you need anything. We have missed you so much. To say we’re sorry doesn’t even touch the way we feel. Wishing you all peace to bring you comfort, courage. to face the days ahead and loving memories to forever hold in you heart.💗

March 23, 2021

Debbie and Family,
You have been in my thoughts in prayers since hearing Dave was ill and you will continue to be. It was such a pleasure to work at LPD with Dave, all of us have Davey Brown stories. Dave could give and with ease take a joke. Dave spoke of you and your kids at work and encouraged me and other younger officers to soak in moments when our kids are young. He also was quick to tell officers to loosen up a bit and smile, I learned from and appreciated Dave.
Dave made a difference for children, those who were abused and neglected. There is a special place in heaven for guys like Davey, I believe that. I know Dave made the same difference at the Dauphin Tech, I stopped up there to visit a coworker of his years ago in auto body and the kids in that program all loved Dave. I still laugh at Dave jumping in my cruiser on George St. a couple of years ago at the front of the Millersville parade because he couldn’t find you guys, only to realize your large group was about 20 yards in front of us yelling to him. Dave had that big grin as he said, yep take me right up there…
In our thoughts, as I believe I will see Dave again, with his big grin.

Dear the brown family,
my name is Daniel snider and I am a former student of mr. brown. I am so sorry for your lost and I send my condolences. David brown was more than just a teacher to me. He was someone I looked up to and someone I could talk to. I was hit hard when I heard the news but remembered all the good times I had in his class while in high school. Favorite memory I have is during the Christmas holiday he would randomly play Christmas music on his stereo system and just made everyone laugh.

I worked side by side with Dave in the L.E. Dept.  at Dauphin County Tech. For five great years.  He was such a great friend, and never a day went by that he was not happy. The kids adored him.  He was the most unselfish person I have ever known.  Dave’s love for his wife Deb, his children and grandchildren were undeniably apparent.  I truly lost a great friend, and know he is now with the Lord.  My thoughts and prayers are with you, Deb.  I truly know the loss you feel right now.

I was a student of Mr. Brown 04-08 we kept in touch throughout the years sporadically. Mr. Brown was like a father figure to me. He set me straight if I did wrong and gave me praise when I did right. Mr. Brown saved my life. High school was tough for me and he knew it. I was depressed to the point I was going to drop out of school. I walked in one day holding a pink paper (drop out form) he took me down to the office and told the principal and my mom who was there, “I’m not signing this!” Without all teachers signatures, I was not able to drop out. I thanked him everytime I spoke to him in the years after. Because of him, I went on to receive a BS in Law and soon a Masters in Healthcare Administration. I am going to dedicate my graduate degree to Mr. Brown. In closing, I would like to share the last email I received from Mr, Brown last spring this email speaks to who he was as a man of God I think his friends and family would appreciate this.

“Hey Eddie,

We are working through this pandemic and school closing extension and it has all of us on an emotional roller coaster.

Hearing from you takes me back to a time that getting ready for NOCTI and anticipating graduation was at the height of our seniors’ attention. You can relate to the good old days!

I am well and my family is doing well, as we are trying to keep my kids and the grandkids safe. The scare for me is having any of them acquire this virus. Not knowing or having a clear expectation, draws on our energy, psyche and emotions.

I am sustained by my love, faith and hope that Our Lord will be with me and my family through this pandemic. I know He will and in His perfect way, will make the best possible result for all true believers. Actually, I hope that this becomes a giant wake-up call to draw us closer to Him, accept His Perfect Love and share it with all people.

I hope your marriage has been a blessing for you. I was so glad when you called that one summer and told me. I always want my kids (yes, my students are my kids) to find true happiness and success in their life. I hope that you are there in your life.

After all of this current junk is over, I would like to meet with you to catch up. I was planning to retire after this year, but now I don’t feel like I can go out like this. I need to be there for the kids, as they come back to school and attempt to adjust mentally and emotionally. They know that I truly care and they will need someone that they know is in their corner and will be there for them. I feel that the process will take us into the next school year and in good conscience, I need to be here for them.

I hope I didn’t bore you, I guess you have given me a place to work out my thoughts and focus on what this life experience is all about. Loving each other and sharing a part of our journey. I will always remember you because our crossroads became critical for you as a student and me as your teacher. Really it was about friendship.

Mr. Brown
