Daniel L. Barkume, 72

January 5, 1949 - April 12, 2021

Daniel L. Barkume, 72, of Brunnerville, passed away peacefully at home early Monday morning, April 12, 2021. Born in Detroit, MI, he was the son of the late John V. and Mary F. (McCarthy) Barkume. Daniel was the beloved husband of Judith (Croft) Barkume, and together they celebrated 49 years of marriage this past November.

Daniel worked as a Trainmaster for ConRail, retiring after 28 years of service. A devout Catholic, he served as the Head Sacristan for ten years at St. James Catholic Church in Lititz, where he also belonged to the Men’s Club and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Active in the community, he was a member and former President of the Lititz Lions Club, where he was an integral part of the eyeglass recycling initiative and held many other positions over the years. In his earlier years, he volunteered his time coaching and umpiring Little League baseball and softball. Daniel enjoyed golfing and was an avid fan of all of the Detroit sports teams – Red Wings Ice Hockey, Tigers baseball and Lions football.

Along with his wife Judy, Daniel is survived by his children, Jennifer Kauffman and her husband Bryan, Craig Barkume and his companion Juliana Sergovic, all of Lancaster, and Cynthia Sullivan and her husband Chris McKee of Williamsport. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Kaci, Annalise, Gage, Evan, Tristan and Cain; a sister Aileen Barkume, and two brothers, Tim Barkume (Linda), and Kevin Barkume (Denise), all of Michigan.

A viewing will take place from 6 PM – 8 PM on Wednesday, April 14, 2021, at the Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA, 17543. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM on Thursday, April 15, 2021, at St. James Catholic Church, 505 Woodcrest Ave., Lititz, PA 17543, with Father John Tizio officiating. Heartfelt condolences to Dann’s family. Pam and I were very sorry to hear of his passing. I’ve gotten to look forward every spring to hearing from Dann to get our foursome together for the Saint James and the Lions golf tournaments. He was a great guy and an average golfer – just like the rest of us! It just won’t be the same without him. Dann, may your drives be long and your putts be true! Safe travels buddy.

Judy and family,
It borders on a cliche to say that Dann will be missed. Nevertheless, it’s true. Dann was a giant of a guy, one of the few people who, when he called you a friend or brother truly meant it from the depth of his heart.  He remained committed to his family, his community, and most importantly his faith throughout his life. I will miss his humor, enthusiasm, and our conversations (he even called me was from his ICU unit last month). May you and your family be comforted to know that Heike and I will keep you all in our prayers throughout your journey forward.

We extend our condolences to you Judy and family.  It was a pleasure to spend the weekend with you and Dann in celebrating our 50th class renunion in Oconomowoc and then getting together again in the Detroit area for a pleasant lunch.  Being in the seminary with Dann and then working at Olympia Stadium gave me the opportunity to know one of the best. I’m sure Dann will still be rooting for his favorite Detroit sports team.  Maybe he’ll provide the nudge they need to become champs.  Rest in Peace my friend.  Deb & Joe Pulis

Judy,
My sincere condolences to you and you family.  Dann was a good friend during our Edgerton days, and I’m glad we were able to keep in sporatic touch over the intervening years, and to spend that weekend together at Oconomowoc reunion.  Dann was truly a man of faith and of service to others.
I will offer Mass for him on Thursday, a few hours before you gather for his funeral, and so will be with you all in prayer:  May Dann rest in the arms of the Redeemer, and may Our Mother of Perpetual Help bring you comfort in your sorrow.
Fr. John Steingraeber, CSsR

Judy & Family,
I’ve only met you once, when you and Dan came to the Class of 67 Reunion in Oconomowoc, WI. Dan’s friend, Jim Robinson passed then news of Dan’s illness and death to the rest of the reunion group.  I’ve always looked up to Dan and the way he lived his faith, his athletic skill and humor are what I remember from high school.  My prayers are with you all.  Requiescat in pace!

Judy, Jen, Craig and Cyndi:

I wanted to pass along my thoughts and prayers as you celebrate the life of your beloved Dann/Dad.  I am only one in a long line of Crofts (even though my last name is Thomas) wishing we could be with you in the coming days to mourn your incredible loss.  Dann was a cousin in-law but really more like a cool Uncle we all looked up to.  He was a great ball player and always fun to be around.  He led our American Family Reunion Softball Teams to victory time and time again (you all know what I’m talking about) and he loved every minute of it. He especially loved hanging out with your Dad/Grandfather, Uncle George and my Dad, who all loved him like a brother.  I hope you take comfort in knowing Dann has been reunited with them and they are all having a laugh together and, no doubt, bellied up to a bar having a few cold beers.

I had the privilege of knowing Dann through the Lititz Lions Club. He was a gentlemen, full of life and laughter. His company will be missed by many Lion members and always remembered. Our prayers and sympathy are with his family.
