Daniel Bard “Dan” Garrett, 80

November 22, 2025

Educator, Judge, Civic Leader, Equestrian

Daniel Bard “Dan” Garrett, 80, of Lititz, passed away on Saturday, November 22, 2025. Born and raised in Denver, PA, he was the son of the late Clarence and Hilda Bard Garrett. Dan was the loving husband of Mary Ann Sneeringer Garrett and they observed their 47th wedding anniversary, with his last day here on earth. Dan proudly graduated from Cocalico High School and Millersville University.

Dan led a life filled with cherished memories. His teaching centered on history, social studies and economics throughout a 32-year career in Conestoga Valley School District. One of the many highlights of his career was to be selected as one of thirty teachers from around the country to spend a week on Wall Street hosted by the New York Stock Exchange. Contacts made from this experience enabled him to take groups of students from his Financial Management and Investing elective to a day on Wall Street ending with experiencing the close from the VIP gallery and subsequent time at a trading post with their host. Following his retirement from teaching in 1999. Dan was elected as Magisterial District Judge in Lititz in 2000. Upon Retirement in 2012, he was appointed by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to the position of Senior Magisterial District Judge, a position he held until 2018.

Beginning in 1989, Dan was appointed to the Warwick Township Planning Commission (Chairman), a position he held until his election to the Township Board of Supervisors (Chairman) in 1994. After retiring as MDJ, Dan was once again appointed to the Planning Commission, resulting in a 35+ year service.

A dedicated and highly skilled horseman, Dan spent more than 25 years operating horse boarding, training, and showing facilities. His deep knowledge of horsemanship earned him respect throughout the equestrian community. He was a proud member of the Cochran Foxhunt and also owned many successful racehorses.

Dan also trained his three German Shepherds to exceptional levels, earning numerous service and obedience titles. His last shepherd, Jetta, was his constant companion and even had a job of her own-carrying files between Dan and his office staff.

Dan and Mary Ann founded Owl Hill Learning Center in 1984, and their childcare business has continued to thrive ever since. Today, it remains in the capable hands of their sons and daughters-in-law.

Organizations to which Dan had the privilege of contributing his time and talent include the Ephrata Jaycees (Past President}, Ephrata Area Social Services, Lancaster Housing and Opportunity Partnership (LHOP}, Quentin Riding Club (Past President},Lititz Lion’s Club, Warwick Education Foundation (Past President}, Lancaster County Magisterial District Judges’ Association (Past President}, and Moravian Manor Communities Board of Trustees. He was also a member of the Hamilton Club.

Many people will remember Dan’s sense of humor, including his quick wit, puns, jokes, and stories. He also enjoyed many hobbies including golf, playing guitar, playing Texas Hold’em, reading and his many aquariums. Enjoying a good cigar with his good friends was a cherished memory. Above all else, Dan was a family man, spending most Saturday nights surrounded by his sons and their families. His grandchildren lovingly referred to him as Pap and will continue to carry on his legacy throughout their many years.

Surviving in addition to his beloved wife, Mary Ann, are two sons, Andrew B. husband of Ashley B. Garrett, Alexander B. husband of Meg K. Garrett, grandchildren, Audrey, Addison, Caroline, Ava, Jackson, and James as well as his sister, Rebecca wife of William Rowe, and many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Celebration of Life at Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543, on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at 12:00 Noon. There will be a time of visitation from 10:00 AM until the time of service. Interment will be private. Those desiring can send contributions in Dan’s memory to Lititz Moravian Communities, 300 West Lemon Street, Lititz Pa 17543, or the Warwick Education Foundation, https://warwickef.org/donate/.

Condolences to the Family

December 22, 2025

Mary Ann – For some reason I have been thinking of you and Dan.  Ride by Owl Hill and just today said to myself I should just go up to the front door and knock.  I got home and a card from Joyce Kohler and told me about Dan.  I remember “renting” a horse from you on Warwick Road – 40 some years ago.  Remember too when you had #1 son.  If I remember right the birth was w/o any pain killers (not really meant to happen).  Many happy memories – at 82 think alot about “old” friends.  My thoughts and prayers are with you all – love all around you.  So many thoughts about so many years gone by.

I was saddened to learn of Dan’s passing… from both a professional and personal standpoint, Dan was fair and thoughtful in his deliberations. As a police officer, I grew to respect his work ethic and moral compass.  I hope some of what I saw in him will be how I treat those around me!  And from a personal perspective, he was a very genuine friend. He will be missed by so many. To his family, my respectful condolences.  Thank you for sharing Dan with so many of us in the community at-large!

Donna and I send our heartfelt condolences to all of Dan’s friends, but especially Mary Ann. Dan certainly was an example of a life well lived and although his passing will leave a hole in the hearts of his family, his memory will soften the edge of the loss. I will miss him in Siesta Keys, FL where I joined him one day for a “healthy” cigar and soon discovered out Lancaster County connection. Dan, I’ll have a cigar for you. We miss you!

We are saddened to hear of Dan’s passing. We would have come to meet your family but had a conflict of schedule. I first learned to know Dan through providing hay for his horses. Dan was a very interesting and friendly man and I appreciated his passion for life. The school you renovated for childcare was where I attended for grades one to six. Our sympathy goes out to your family. May the Lord give you comfort in the loss of your husband and father. Blessings, Joe and Eileen Stahl

Dan and I go back to high school days. I also started college at Millersville for my first year of college, but I left Millersville and went on to finish college in New York. We lost touch after that. Nevertheless, I have many good memories with Dan. Reading his obituary reminded me of many of those times. I would harmonize as a group of us would sing folk songs while he played his 12 string Goya. I loved riding with him in his MGA. We both worked at the Denver station on the Pennsylvania turnpike, but while he worked at the gas station, I worked inside in the rerstaurant. I was really surprised to hear of his horsemanship, though, because I remember one time when he and I went horseback riding together, renting the horses from a local stable. Dan was so scared by the horse he rode on the way out, that we switched horses for the ride back. As we headed back, I realized why. That horse was so intent on getting back to its stall, that it raced back at full speed straight into the stable. I had to duck to avoid being decapitated. There were many other mischevious experiences, but you get the gist. To your family Dan, I send my condolences. The community there shares your loss. He was quite a guy.
Best Regards, Dean Wenrich

I was so sad to read of Dan’s passing.
Dan and I crossed paths for years during our municipal service days. He always had a way of bringing some levity to the conversation! He recruited me to the board of LHOP (now Tenfold), and we were able to raise awareness of the need for more affordable housing in the Lititz/Warwick area. We advocated for units at Walnut Street and Newport Square, and he was very happy to hear of the Saxony Ridge project at Moravian Manor. I will always be greatful for that opportunity!
May you find solace in the days ahead.

Mr. Garrett was my teacher in Junior High and High School. I took his Financial Management elective because he was my favorite teacher and I was on the incredible Wall Street field trip. And I was lucky to reconnect with him as an adult when my children attended Owl Hill in Lititz. My favorite memories of him are (1) painting Mesopotamia on the floor of the classroom and (2) hearing from the Owl Hill staff that one day, my 5-year-old son was having a tough day and was sitting alone on a bench. Mr. Garrett sat down beside him and they had a lengthy conversation about dinosaurs. That is the kind of man I always knew him to be, he would take time for you.
Prayers for all his family and friends,
Jennifer (Gehman) Marzinko and family

Our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to Mary Ann and family. As a member of that great Cocalico Class of ’63, I can say that Dan was a wonderful member. He was not only smart but always had a ready smile and a note of good humor every time you spoke to him. Kudos to the successful career he had during his life. The last time I spoke to him was at our 50th class reunion. Jerry & Madeline (Weinhold Class of ’63) Harding

Mary Ann — I was saddened to read about Dan’s passing.  We go back to elementary and high school days and then working on the turnpike at the Gulf station.  I LOVED his 1960 (I think it was 1960) MGA.  What a sweet car that was.  We discovered that we were both self-taught guitarists.  We’d get together at his parents or my parents and sing and play till the wee hours (he had a 12 string, mine was a 6 string).  After graduating from college, we lost track of each other until one night at the Ephrata Legion Restaurant, we saw the two of you with some other folks — we were all going to hear my former college roommate, Dave Stahl’s band (you had sung with his religious orchestra).  We then joined your group (including Dan and Kathy Doremus) that would go to hear Dave’s band when they played locally.  Dan was a great guy, he had a wicked sense of humor, and played a mean folk guitar.  May he rest in peace and may you and your family cherish his memory.  Jay Hertzog

I had Mr. Garrett as an economics teacher back around 1998-1999.  I enjoyed his class and when I told him I wrote occasionally for the “Freestyles” section of the Saturday edition of the Lancaster newspaper (section written by teens), he put up some of my articles on a bulletin board. When I asked him to sign my yearbook he left a very encouraging message about my writing talent.        Justin Bandy, class of 99

1984 I was an 8th grade transfer to CV Jr High. I had moved from the Main Line and clearly knew no one, did NOT fir in and I moved in after everyone else in the tight knit CV Community had made friend groups. Compared to CV, my previous school was very rigorous and I was far ahead in many classes esp history, civics & languages. Mr G was sooo kind and he allowed my knowledge and interest to shine without making me appear too smart or too nerdy. He encouraged me to continue my studies in history & government and said it may be a great path for me in college. Years later, BA in Government earned, I worked for a company that collaborated with DAs and MDJs and our paths crossed- he remembered me and we had a great conversation. Kind, knowledgeable, fair and gracious- all words I will always associate with one of my favorite and most influential teachers. I pray for peace for your family & for all those who called him friend. Mr G and his positive impact on the Lancaster Community will certainly be missed. Betsy Robinson Jaquith

So sorry to hear Dan passed away. My parents (Donald & Joie Smith) shared a lot of fun times together all centered around Dan and Donald’s love of fox hunting. Sunday tailgating at Lancaster polo, fox hunting and barn time banded these men and their wives. I enjoyed Dan’s wit and his true concern and interest in his friends and families. He led a full life. RIP Dan

On stage over the years Mary Ann kindly added her voice to Leo’s and mine.  But one of the kindest things she ever did for me was to introduce me to Dan.
I wrote and first shared this verse as part of a song  back in the early 70s during a memorial service for a dear friend of Mary Ann’s .  Since then, from Maui to Munich, it seemed that the song had been inspired by and sung for folks whose paths were destined to cross mine long after that day in Milliersville.  Now I know that Dan was one of them.
” Goodbye brother. Goodbye sister.
If I don’t see you any more.
Well God bless you, and God bless you,
If I don’t see you any more. ”
