C. Daniel Deiter

June 12, 2014

“Things turn out best for the people who make the best of how things turn out”.
John Wooden

Dan or “Danny” to those who knew and loved him. Devoted father. Loving grandfather and great grandfather. Baby brother. Precious friend and neighbor. Dan enjoyed sharing his life experiences through storytelling, pictures, and letters. His wit, charisma, intellect, creativity, and charm won the hearts of many. He loved spending time with his family, friends, and his devoted dogs. Dan was an avid sports fan with a passion for Philadelphia teams.

Born and raised in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Charles M. and Mary (Weber) Deiter. He graduated from Manheim Township High School and F&M College. He remained friends with many of his childhood buddies, who met regularly as “The Breakfast Club.” He loved fishing with his friend on their boat, the 50/50 and taking “bucket list” vacations with his daughters.

Following high school, Dan enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving overseas in Germany during the Korean Conflict. He made lifelong friends and traveled throughout Europe while touring with the 1614th Support Squadron Green Hornets basketball team.

Dan worked as a banker after graduating with a Business degree from F&M College. He retired as Vice President of Lending from Meridian Mortgage Company and cherished every minute of his retirement. He was proud to have lived to have been an “octogenarian.” Dan’s most valued position in life was that of a father.

Dan and Marilyn Loechner Deiter, his wife of 37 years, raised five daughters. He was an amazing father and mentor who taught his daughters to be independent, resourceful, responsible, compassionate, and strong. He is survived by his daughters, all living in Lancaster: Beth Doutrich, married to Don, Tracey Kunes, married to Greg, Dana Murr, married to Todd, Jean Parsons, married to Don, Melissa Werner, married to Mark, and honorary daughter, Diane Esbenshade Kurtz, sisters Faye Groff and Joanne Koch, both of Willow Street, thirteen grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Dan passed away in his home on Thursday, June 12, 2014 surrounded by his loving family after a valiant fight to overcome several debilitating medical conditions. His strength and courage were nothing short of miraculous. He will be deeply missed and always remembered by so many who loved and respected him. Daddy, you filled our lives with love and laughter.
p.s. We love you the best. Don’t tell the rest.

I met Dan through his daughters Tracey and Dana, whom I went to school with.  He loved talking about basketball and was a kind soft-spoken man.

To all the Deiter girls,
I was saddened to read about the death of your dad, he is the epitome of what is special about his generation who have dealt with so much yet complained so little.  What a wonderful tribute written for him, and what an ongoing tribute all five of you are as you carry on his special gifts in your own lives and nurture what he has passed onto his grandchildren as well.  I wish you all peace as you travel this journey called grief.

My deepest sympathy to the family of Mr Deither. I only knew him for a very short time but I feel I knew him longer by getting to know all of his lovely daughter’s and really cool wife. His amazing characteristics described above have been sweetly manifested and carried on through his children.  His instilled integrity lives on in a very blessed way.
My warmest condolences,
febe
