Barbara E. “Bobbie” Book, 77
Barbara (Bobbie) Ellen (Reddig) Book, 77, of 1649 Princess Anne Drive, died Tuesday, June 9, following a brave battle with cancer. She was the wife of Charles W. Book, with whom she celebrated 55 years of marriage on October 24, 2008.
Born in Lancaster, Bobbie was the daughter of the late Agnew Walton and Albertha (Silvius) Reddig. She is survived by four children: Charles W. Jr., husband of Helen (Weaver) Book, of Lebanon; Susan, wife of F. Joseph Byorick; Donna, wife of Kenneth Wright II; and Kathleen, wife of Michael Daminger, all of Lancaster; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister Joyce, wife of Donald Echterling, and brother Agnew Walton Reddig Jr., husband of Brenda Reddig. She was preceded in death by twin sons James and John Joseph Book.
Bobbie was a 1949 graduate of McCaskey High School, and she continued to enjoy occasional get-togethers with fellow “49-er Girls.”
A member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Bobbie served there in many capacities. She was particularly active with the church’s Senior Shepherds, and she and her husband Bud enjoyed weekly Sunday morning breakfasts with fellow seniors at the Leola Family Restaurant.
For years Bobbie worked as a telephone operator, first at Bell Telephone, then at Sears department store, and finally retiring in 1985 from Lancaster General Hospital.
But her main job in life had always been that of wife, mother and grandmother, and it was from this ‘occupation’ that she drew the most pleasure. She tirelessly gave of herself to others and always put their needs before her own.
She enjoyed gardening and found much contentment “getting her hands dirty.” An outdoors lover, she and her family were campers for years, and later she and her husband loved hunting for treasure with their metal detectors. They also spent many happy hours fishing together.
But most of all, Bobbie loved her family and friends. And she was treasured by them. She had been, and will continue to be, a guiding light of quiet wisdom to all who knew her.
Funeral services will be held at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 750 Greenfield Road, Lancaster on Saturday, June 13, 2009, at 10 AM. with Rev. Mark Russell officiating. The family will receive friends from 9-10 AM at the church. Interment will follow at Conestoga Memorial Park. Kindly omit flowers. Charley,
I’m so sorry for your loss. Since I lost my husband recently, I know how painful it is, but it will get better. With the help of your family and friends you will make it, one day at a time. Again, I’m so sorry.
Carol Resh
I’m so sorry for the loss of your wife, Bobbie. I know how close you are as friends and fishing buddies. I am so sorry for the long and painful illness she had. It’s been over fifteen years since I lost my wife Beth, she was my friend and fishing buddy. My prayers and condolences are with your entire family. I’m sorry I couldn’t attend her funeral. My prayers go out to Chuck, Susan, Donna, and Kathleen. Your Mother was a wonderful person. Also, my best to Ken and Mike.
Friendship and Prayers,
Joseph Krawizcki
