Audrey M. (Culp) Quinn, 99

December 01, 2024

Audrey M. (Culp) Quinn of Lititz, PA, died of natural causes on Sunday, Dec. 1, 2024, at Oak Leaf Manor South in Millersville. She was 99.

Born on July 24, 1925, to Russel D. Culp and Margaret (Schramm) Culp in Wilkes Barre, PA, Audrey was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was married for 72 years to Melvin E. Quinn, who preceded her in death in 2018.

Audrey was a devout Protestant and an active member of the Church of Christ wherever she and her husband lived.

A homemaker for most of her life, Audrey worked in retail, food service, and catering in her youth. Later, she served as a clerk in the tax department at the Office of the Lancaster County Treasurer, retiring in 1992. In her retirement, she and her husband provided childcare, babysitting, and pet-sitting services for many years. Throughout their lives, she and Mel were tireless volunteers for libraries, hospices, and other community-based nonprofit organizations.

From the time they were married on Oct. 20, 1945, at Parson’s Primitive Methodist Church in Wilkes Barre, PA, Mel and Audrey traveled extensively across America and lived in several states, including Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Florida. They both enjoyed being close to nature and loved camping and traveling with their family.

Audrey journaled nearly every day of her adult life and was an avid reader, being partial to historical fiction. Her husband was a prolific writer as well, and together, they belonged to several writing groups in the Central Pennsylvania area, even starting one in Lancaster County. Audrey was also one of the founders of the Brethren Village Library and a longtime member of the 4Cs.

In her later years, Audrey relished her role as a grandmother and great-grandmother and was affectionally known as “Nana” to people inside and outside her family. Asked about the secret to a long life, she would often credit hers to “clean livin’ and self-denial.”

Always warm and affectionate, Audrey will be remembered by her boys as the best mother they could have. She set a shining example of Christian virtue with steady nurturing, fair discipline, and lots and lots of love. Throughout her life, Audrey had many friends and made a lasting impact on those she met. She was beloved by many and will be sorely missed.

She is survived by three sons, Glen R. and his wife Toni L. (Jacobson) Quinn of Lancaster, PA; Robert L. Quinn of Orange Park, FL; and David G. Quinn of Ephrata, PA; four grandchildren, Justin W. and his wife Elizabeth A. (Rothan) Quinn of Millersville; Shasta C. Quinn and her husband Damon Wood of Ocoee, FL.; Mana J. (Quinn) and her husband Matthew Welsh of Charlottesville, VA; and Willow (Quinn) and her husband Maximilian Opheim of Asheville, NC. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Rose and Lily Quinn, daughters of Justin and Elizabeth; Simon and Jacob Wood, sons of Shasta and Damon; and Lucian and Adrian Opheim, sons of Willow and Maximilian; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, Audrey was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey E. Quinn; six brothers, Robert Culp, William Culp, Gerald Culp, Earle Culp, Howard Culp, and Donald Culp; and two sisters, Doris Culp and Janice Hoon.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, 2024, at Brethren Village Chapel, 3009 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Interment at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA, will be held immediately following the service for family only.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Audrey’s name to Hospice of Lancaster County in accordance with her wishes.
