Audrey A. Doerr, 77

Audrey A. Doerr, 77, of East Hempfield Twp., Lancaster found her way to our Heavenly Father while resting at home last Tuesday morning.

She was the devoted wife of Gerald S. “Jerry” Doerr, retired principal of Mountville Elementary School, patiently waiting for Audrey to join him since January 2001.  They were married January 26, 1957 at Sacred Heart Church.  Audrey was the daughter of Martin L. and Marguerite A. (Nikolaus) Young.

Graduated from Lancaster Catholic High School, Audrey was a baton twirler on the drill team and kept in touch with many of her classmates through retirement enjoying their monthly luncheons.  She also graduated from the Maryland Medical Secretarial School, now part of the Hagerstown Area Community College, Hagerstown, MD, looking forward each of the annual reunions.

Upon graduation, Audrey worked as Medical Secretary for a local neurosurgical practice.  She later joined her father in business, first as an assistant at Kirstien’s Stationary Store then in managing real estate assets including mobile home parks, retail properties, and residences.

Devoted to her family and to her parents, Audrey also kept busy helping numerous elderly couples that she met throughout her life, often invited to call them Aunt and Uncle.  Audrey was awarded a certificate for many years of service as a Red Cross Hospital Volunteer and additionally served other community organizations in various volunteer roles.  She was parishioner at St Leo the Great Catholic Church.

Audrey was a member of the Wheatland Junior Women’s Club, the Lancaster Business and Professional Woman’s Club, the Elizabethtown College Auxiliary, St Anne’s Home Auxiliary, along with other charitable and social organizations.

Throughout her life Audrey played piano, was a very talented arts and crafts enthusiast, played golf, and kept numerous collections especially cookbooks.   As an accomplished cook and baker she created gourmet dinners but those closest to the family found her chicken pot pie the tastiest in the Dutch Country.  Another frequent pleasure was lunch and shopping, always beginning to gather and wrap Christmas presents for the following holiday immediately after the New Year.  She and Jerry traveled extensively including multiple excursions to Europe, numerous cruises, and tours of most of the United States including Alaska and Hawaii.  A favorite for both was attending shows in Las Vegas.  Audrey and Jerry’s true delight was entertaining family and friends whether at home, at their Long Level Cottage, or their home in Myrtle Beach.

Surviving are a son, Michael G. Doerr of Lancaster and a daughter.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at 11AM at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church 2427 Marietta Ave.  Lancaster, PA 17601with the Rev. Peter I. Hahn as Celebrant.
