May 14, 2017
Arthur F. Bowman, 77, passed away at his residence in Brook Place North, Brethren Village on Sunday, May 14, 2017. He was born in Hopeland, PA on March 6, 1940 to the late Edna Boyer and Lewis Bowman.
Art graduated from Ephrata High School in 1958 and later Lebanon Valley College in 1962 with a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry. Soon after college, Art married his high school sweetheart, Barbara (Fasnacht) Bowman. Art and Barb settled in Tamaqua, PA in the mid-1960’s raising two children, Kimberly and Andy. Art and Barb made Tamaqua their home for over 40 years until they retired to Lancaster County in 2010. Art and Barb were inseparable until Barb’s death in summer 2011.
Art worked as a research scientist for DuPont Chemical in Delaware and later for Atlas Powder Company and ICI Explosives, Tamaqua, PA. During his career, Art was responsible for advancements in detonator technology, with that work resulting in the issuance of several patents.
Art was known for his calm demeanor and dry sense of humor, his kind and compassionate heart and his love for his family and community. Art loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. Art spent a great deal of time in his retirement volunteering for the Hometown Fire Company as a Fire Policeman. He was also a member of the First Methodist Church, Tamaqua, PA.
Art is survived by his brother Lewis Bowman and sister-in-law Erla Mae Bowman of Lancaster, PA; son Andrew and daughter-in-law Rachel Finley-Bowman of Lancaster, PA; daughter Kimberly Schittler and son-in-law David Schittler of Fleetwood, PA. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Grace, Jack and Tommy Bowman of Lancaster, PA, and Benjamin Schittler of Fleetwood, PA. His grandson Andrew L. Schittler preceded Art in death. Art is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
A visitation will take place from 10 to 11 AM, followed by celebration of Art’s life at 11 AM with Pastor J. Mark Tedford officiating, on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at the Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543. Interment will be private. So sorry to hear about Art. My condolences to everyone in his family and my prayers for Christ’s compassion for all of you. I was privileged to be one of Art’s colleauges from 1982 to 1996 at the old Atlas Powder Research and Development Lab in Tamaqua (later a part of ICI Explosives North American Research and Technology). He was a great guy to work with and everyone loved his sense of humor and ability to get along with everyone he met, in Tamaqua, in Germany, in Scotland and in Brownsburg, Quebec!

To Andy, Kim and family………..sadly, our dear “Atlas” friend, Arthur, has passed from this Earth. We remember the dinners, picnics, parties, & school events we enjoyed when the children were growing up. Now we “rejoice” in Art’s happiness to be reunited with Barb for eternity. Blessings to all………..Gerald and Dawn Oswald
