Alex F. Gerz, 86

Alex F. Gerz, 86, of Lancaster, died Monday, April 9, 2007 at Lancaster General Hospital after a brief illness.

He was the husband of Agatha A. “Tookie” McCaughey Gerz, with whom he celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary this past February 26th. Born in Lancaster, Alex was the son of the late Alex W. and Frances (Rose) Gerz.

Alex was the part owner of Alex Gerz Radiator, Inc. of Lancaster. He worked in the family business since 1938.

He was a US Army veteran of World War II, serving as a Tech 4 in the Hudson Bay region of Canada.

Alex was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, where we volunteered at the weekly bingo games, and was very instrumental helping to start their bingo program.

Alex was the chairman and Scoutmaster of Troop 20 at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, and was the Cubmaster of Pack 118 of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. Alex was also involved with the Sea Scouts of Lancaster.

He was a life member of Lancaster Sertoma Club since 1957, having perfect attendance for over 40 years. He enjoyed traveling, golfing, playing cards and socializing with friends. He also loved to spend time with his family.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, A. Michael  married to Lynne (Lawrence) Gerz of Conestoga; a grandson, Eric married to Jennifer Gerz; and 2 great granddaughters, Adeline and Norah. He is also survived by 4 brothers: Barry T. married to Gloria Gerz of Lancaster, Joseph F.  married to Josephine Gerz of Leola, and Bernard A. and Francis A., both of Lancaster; and by 2 sisters, Joanne Sinopoli of Lancaster and Rose Marie Zekany of Rothsville. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Robert and Charles.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial on Friday at 1:00 p.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 501 E. Orange St., Lancaster, PA 17602. Friends will be received on Thursday at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home, 414 E. King St., Lancaster, PA from 6:00-8:00 p.m., with the recitation of the Rosary at 8:00 p.m. There will be a second viewing on Friday from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Entombment in St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery. Please omit flowers, memorial contributions may be sent in Alex’s memory to St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church.
