Winifred M. Tierney, 92, of Lancaster County, PA, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, March 31, 2019. Born in Philadelphia, PA, she was the daughter of the late James and Winifred (McFadden) Sweeney. Winifred was the seventh of the ten Sweeney children. She graduated from Hallahan Catholic High School and St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse.
Winifred married William "Bill" V. Tierney Sr. in 1949 and they moved to Lancaster in 1950. William and Winifred were married for thirty two years until his death in December 1981. She was an active member of St. Anne's Catholic Church and later one of the original members of St. John Neumann Catholic Church. Winifred served as a nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital, Lancaster Osteopathic Hospital, Lancashire Nursing Home and as a private duty nurse during her career.
She is survived by her sister, Sr. Ann Sweeney, SSJ, Chestnut Hill, PA, her six children, William V. Jr. (Ann), Fairfax, VA; Maureen W. Rece (Ellis), Augusta, GA; Timothy J. (Bonnie), Niceville, FL; Michael J., Fredrick, MD; Kevin J. (Suzie), Portland, ME; and John R.; Lancaster, PA. and her eight grandchildren; Genevieve M. Guastella, Neil P. Tierney; Matthew Tierney; Ian M. Tierney; Connor P. Tierney; Madison Tierney, Bailey Tierney and Alexander Bleacher-Tierney.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her four brothers, James Sweeney, Joseph Sweeney, Charles Sweeney and Francis Sweeney and four of her sisters, Mary Lynch, Margaret Mary Kemp, Regina Glackin and Sr. Grace Sweeney SSJ.
A Viewing will be held from 9:30-10:30AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30AM on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 601 E. Delp Rd, Lancaster, PA 17601. Interment will follow in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Philadelphia, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph Villa, 110 W. Wissahickon Ave. Flourtown, PA 19031.
