Obituary

William J. Winnerling, Jr. 86, of Lancaster passed away Sunday, August 26, 2012, at St. Anne's Retirement Community surrounded by his loving family. Born in Lancaster, PA he was the son of the late William J. and Nida (Homsher)Winnerling. He was married to Margaret M. (Terry) Winnerling for over 66 years.

Bill had worked many years for the US government as a diesel locomotive mechanic for the New Cumberland Army Depot and retired after 32 years of service in 1978. A proud veteran of the US Navy, Bill served aboard the USS Tillman during World War II and received a purple heart for his faithful service during the war. He also was active in the Korean conflict. A member of St. Philip's Catholic Church he was involved in the men's club at the church. He was a member of the Moose Lodge #596, VFW Millersville Post #7294, and the Knights of Columbus. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening, and spending time with his family. Bill was a very loving husband, father and grandfather. The family would like to thank the staff at St. Anne's for the special care that was provided to Bill during his time there.

In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by his children; Donna M. Steinmetz, of Lancaster, William J. Winnerling III, husband of Berit of Palmetto, FL, David Winnerling, husband of Carla of Pequea, PA, Jane M. Sweater, wife of Richard, of Lititz, James Winnerling, husband of Patricia, of Millsboro, DE and Paul W. Winnerling, companion of Len Goldston, of Charlotte, NC. He is also survived by a sister, Mary Prange wife of Gerald of Pinehurst, NC; 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his two sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11AM on Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at St. Philip's the Apostle Catholic Church, 2111 Millersville Pike, Millersville, PA with the Rev. Mark E. Weiss as Celebrant.  A viewing will be held at the church on Wednesday between 10-11AM. Entombment will be in the Conestoga Memorial Park Mausoleum with military honors accorded by the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard and the Vet- 21 Salute Honor Guard.
