IN LOVING MEMORY OF
William R.
“Bill” Hazlett
August 16, 2024
William R. "Bill" Hazlett, 84, passed away at Brethren Village, Lititz, PA on August 16, 2024. Born in Darby, PA, he was the son of the late Robert and Margaret L. Hazlett of Collingdale, PA. Bill was the husband of Barbara Ann (Bushong) Hazlett. They would have celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on August 26th.
Bill was a 1957 graduate of Collingdale High School, Delaware County, where he was an All-Star football and basketball player.
Bill was honorably discharged from the Navy in Norfolk, VA, where he served under Admiral Robert Lee Dennison at FAU CINCLANT FLT HDQ.
A graduate of Millersville University in 1965, Bill taught civics and history at Reynolds and Warwick Junior High Schools. While at Warwick, he served as a negotiator, vice president, and president of the Warwick Teachers Association. He was chosen by the Lititz Ministerium to help establish the weekday Released Time Education Program, which is still in existence today.
During the late 1960's, Bill served as an ad-hoc member of the Warwick Township Planning Commission, helping to name roads and number properties. He was elected to the Warwick Twp. board in 1980, where he served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Township, prior to the hiring of a full-time township manager. He organized and codified all Township ordinances and brought the bookkeeping system in compliance with state code. Bill, along with Bob Wohlsen designed the current Warwick Township building. Bill served on the County Open Space and the Parks Committee promoting open space and rails-to-trails.
From 1967 to 1981, he was the Owner-Proprietor of Olde Towne Store and Antiques, Lititz, later purchasing the property. In 1983, the property was placed on the National Historic Register, leading the way for other downtown Lititz properties gaining registry as well.
Bill spent 27 years in the real estate business, specializing in low impact small developments, including Knob Hill, Strawberry Fields, Windsor Gardens, Stony Lane, as well as six others in the county.
Bill had many interests including Scrabble, chats with his cousins and Corridor M friends, classic movies, watching football, "Dad" jokes, countryside drives, but his greatest love was talking to and spending time with his eight grandchildren. Having accepted Christ at age 17, he was a faithful member of St. Luke's UCC for 48 years and at the time of his death, had been a member of Reformed Presbyterian Church in Ephrata for 16 years.
Bill is survived by his wife Barbara, three sons and eight grandchildren; son, W. Todd Hazlett, wife Melissa and their children Samuel, Ella, Callum, and Kate of Mohnton, PA; Son Dr. Timothy J. Hazlett and his children Sage, Avery, and Madeleine of Craig, CO; son Chad R. Hazlett, wife Tammy, and their daughter Bridget of Oak Creek, CO. He is also survived by his sister Marguerite L. Hazlett of Newark, DE and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his brother Robert G. Hazlett.
A visitation will be held on Friday, August 23, 2024 from 11AM to 12PM at Charles F. Snyder Jr., Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543. A memorial service will follow beginning at 12PM.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Reformed Presbyterian Church Deacon's Fund, 21 East Locust Street, Ephrata, PA, 17522 or to the Brethren Village Retirement Community Benevolent Fund, 3001 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543 (Attn: Development Department). And, in true Bill-fashion, please share the corniest joke you know with someone to make them smile.
