Obituary

Vera (Salomon) Solodky, 93, of Lancaster, PA, finally closed her eyes at 2:35AM on Saturday, December 5, 2015 at Masonic Health Care Center in Elizabethtown, PA. She was born on May 10, 1922 in New Orleans, Louisiana to the late Ferdinand and Rebecca (Smith) Salomon. She spent her formative years in New Orleans where she graduated from Sophie B. Wright High School in 1939, then graduated New Orleans Business School (Secretarial). Her claim to fame was singing on the radio, WWL, as a regularly featured artist in the late 1930s and early 1940s. She moved to Philadelphia in 1944 after marrying Leonard Solodky, and they eventually settled their family in Lancaster in 1952 in Manheim Township. She was a lifetime member of Hadassah, Bnai Brith International, Lancaster Jewish Community Center, Co-chair of March of Dimes (Grandview Heights), longtime faithful member of Temple Beth El and the Sisterhood's Womens Club. She is survived by her daughter Marilyn S. Goldman Reichenthal, wife of Jay, of Lititz, five grandchildren, Carrie, Eric, Kimberly, Ian, and Richard, five great grandchildren Jordan, Benjamin, Noah, Kelly, and Emily, many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her son, Stanley Joel Solodky (2004), former husband Leonard Solodky (2010) and sister Mrs. Leo (Gloria) Fisher (Aug. 2015) of New Orleans, LA. Vera will be remembered for her sheer strength, as a dedicated mother, especially after her son was stricken with polio at age 7, in 1953. She had an uncommon warmth, an expansive laugh and enjoyed telling old family stories. Gentle, kind and generous, she was loved by all: family, friends, neighbors, and the angels at Masonic Village who cared for her along with her daughter and son-in-law since January 2015. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Graveside Service at Beth El Cemetery 135 E. Newport Rd. Lititz, PA at 3PM Sunday, December 6, 2015 with Rabbi Rami Pavolotzky and Daniela Szuster officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Vera's memory may be made to Temple Beth El 1836 Rohrerstown Rd. Lancaster, PA 17601.
