Obituary

Timothy William Hammel, 71, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at his Lancaster home on Sunday, January 31, 2016, after a lengthy battle with Amyloidosis, while under the care of Hospice & Community Care. Tim was born in Philadelphia, the son of the late William C. Hammel and Arlene Hollinger Hammel Tucker.

He graduated from Lampeter-Strasburg High School in 1963 and from Thaddeus Stevens Trade School in 1966. He married his high school sweetheart, Karen Sue Brown on September 10, 1966. Tim entered active duty in the United States Navy aboard the USS Hugh Purvis DD709.

Upon honorable discharge, he was employed in the telecommunications industry for his entire life at companies including Bell Telephone of PA, American Telephone and Telegraph and retired from Lucent Technologies after 31 years. After retirement, he contracted for R.R. Donnelley working on their telecommunications equipment for 11 more years.

Tim was a member of Calvary Church, where he served in the Children's Ministries until his illness. Tim loved the outdoors and was Assistant Scout Master in Boy Scout Troop 267 for more than 30 years. He was a member of the Order of the Arrow, graduated from Wood Badge and was honored with the Harvest District Award of Merit. He was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers.

Tim is survived by his wife Karen Sue; two sons, Matthew William Hammel, married to Heather (George) of Hallam, and Nathan Peter Hammel, married to Traci (Homsher) of Quarryville; two grandsons, James William and Michael Evan Hammel of Hallam; and his mother-in-law Mildred Weaver Brown of Woodcrest Villa. In addition to his parents, Tim was preceded in death by a grandson, Joseph R. M. Hammel and step-father Irvin Tucker.

A visitation will take place from 10 to 11am, followed by the memorial service at 11 am on Saturday, February 6, 2016, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Rd., Lancaster, PA 17601. Private interment with Military Honors will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. Please omit flowers. Memorial contributions may be mailed to Water Street Mission, P.O.
