Thomas F. Shirk, 89, died on May 16, 2016 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Julia Sullivan Shirk and the son of the late Thomas C. and Mary (Kirchner) Shirk. He graduated from Mount St. Joseph's in Baltimore, MD and Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA with a B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering. He was a member of the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity. He was the Lancaster County Engineer from 1967-1989 during which time he was responsible for maintenance and construction of county bridges, the Lancaster County Court House and Annex addition and various renovations at the prison, Conestoga View and Barnes Hall. Previously he was the Lancaster City Engineer and was also employed by DuPont and Buchart Engineering Corporation. Tom was a registered Professional Engineer in PA, MD and FL. He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, National Society of Professional Engineers and Lincoln Chapter, PA Society of Professional Engineers. A veteran of World War II, Tom served in the U.S. Navy on two light cruisers in the Pacific theatre. He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by a daughter, Georganne Shirk, New York City and son, Michael, Leola, PA. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert C. Shirk. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11AM on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 558 W. Walnut St, Lancaster, PA. Friends will be received at the church on Saturday one hour prior to the Mass. Interment in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
