Thomas J. Amico, 86, of Lancaster, passed away Friday, January 18, 2013 at the VA Hospice in Coatesville.
Born in Lancaster, he was the husband of Pauline Rose (Steinbaecher) Amico of Lancaster, to whom he was married 63 years. He was the son of the late Frank P. and Saveria (Curti) Amico.
Thomas was a firefighter with the Lancaster Fire Department, having received the first Fireman of the Year Award. He worked for 27 years, retiring in January, 1979. He was also the first President of Firefighters Local 319, and one of the first EMTs for the Lancaster City Fire Department. He was a driver for Brethren Village for 10 years, a school bus driver for Manheim Township, and a maintenance machinist for Machinery Products.
He was proud that he received his GED Diploma in 2000 at the age of 73. He was a member of the American Legion Post #34, the Strasburg Sportsman's Club, 8 th Ward Club, Knights of Columbus #867, and St. Joseph's Guys and Dolls.
Thomas was a Navy veteran of WWII, where he was assigned to the Motor Torpedo Boat Squad #9.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons: Thomas M. Amico and his wife Cheryl of Holtwood, and David C. Amico and his wife Roxanne of Lititz; four granddaughters, one grandson, three great-grandsons: Logan, Drew, and Caleb; and one great-granddaughter, Riley. He was preceded in death by two sisters, one brother, and one great-granddaughter.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 440 St. Joseph St., Lancaster, PA 17603. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM on Monday, January 21, 2013 at Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 414 E. King St., Lancaster, PA. and again one hour prior to the mass on Tuesday at the church. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. Please omit flowers.
