The Right Reverend James C. Hughes, 92, of Downingtown, PA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at Simpson Meadows in Downingtown, PA. Born in Winston Salem, NC, he was the loving husband of the late Maurita Cox Hughes; at the time of her death they were married for 67 years. He was the son of the late James Reuben and Dora Ethel Hayes Hughes. He graduated from Moravian College and Theological Seminary in 1945 and was later awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity. In 1985, he earned the Doctorate of Ministries from Princeton Theological Seminary. He was formerly the Pastor at Home Moravian Church in Winston-Salem, NC, the Lititz Moravian Church, Calvary Moravian Church in Winston-Salem, NC, and Mayodan Moravian Church, Mayodan, NC. In 1974 while serving the Lititz church, Rev. Hughes was elevated to the Episcopacy and has served as a Bishop since. He is survived by his daughter, Ruth Hughes, wife of Donald J. Lambert, Downingtown, PA; five grandchildren, Lindsay Dunham Hughes, wife of Thomas Patrick McKinnon, Roanoke, VA, James Calvin "Trevor" Hughes III, Wilmington, NC, Jennifer Kaye Lambert, Philadelphia, PA, Rachel Ann, wife of Justin D. Vogel, Wilmington, DE, and Allison Michelle Lambert, Reading, PA, two great grandchildren, Patrick Carlyle and Logan Hayes McKinnon, Roanoke, VA; and a daughter-in-law, Emmalee H. Hughes of Winston-Salem, NC. He was preceded in death by a son, James C. Hughes, Jr. in 2013. An informal reception will be held at the Eschbach Parlor at Lititz Moravian Church on Sunday, December 6 from 3-5 P.M. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Bishop Hughes' memorial service at the Lititz Moravian Church, 8 Church Square, Lititz, PA 17543 on Monday, December 7, 2015. The Memorial Service with The Rev. Dean R. Jurgen officiating will be held in the church sanctuary at 11:00 A.M. and a reception to follow. The interment, open to friends and family, will take place at the Lititz Moravian Cemetery prior to the service at 10:15 A.M.
